No this is all the information i have. They seem to only ever give me half the information (i'm not worthy i suppose) which is what makes me sick. My ex might have information but as you can guess we don't see eye to eye anymore and never speak to each other.

So if I understand correctly they have taken a debt of £3,218 in 1992 and made it into a debt (including fees) of £73,185?

This is totally outragous. Have you been to CAB?

i Have tried most things and to be honest everyone said 'oh well you are jointly liable' and they are right to chase you.......

I've really reached the end of my tether with it all as i'm begining to think am i the only one that can see that i'm being stitched up here??

51k's worth of interest as well....... they must be having a laugh on me.

I've got the ombusdman involved now and i will go to CAB as well but they can be a bit week when it comes to this sort of stuff and usually say 'speak to a Solicitor.. which i have also done in the past... but that didn't get me anywhere either. i just end up chucking more money at getting it all sorted out.

Its appalling isn't it.. How they think they can get away with it is beyond me, which is why i registered on here... but trying to get someone to fight my corner is the diffucult task. I need Martin Lewis to kick there back sides for me i think.... helppppp

Yes, you were jointly liable, for £3,218. They have been negligent in allowing this debt to spiral to such a high amount, particularly after you notified them of the situation. They have also charged very high rates.

There are legal principles against carging unfair levels of interest, surely your solicitor (and even CAB) should know the laws about this?

Personally there is no way I would be prepared to offer anything. Any lawyers around here?

The CAB can provide a Solicitor for you , free of charge.

One thing bothers me in all this - why has it gone on for so long?

Usually the creditor would have gone for bankruptcy long ago.

When i started reading this I though, "thats really unfortunate - but sadly one of those things that happen when joint mortgages go wrong" I was going to suggest that it is the lenders responsibility to mitigate losses on reposession and to keep you informed of outstanding debts.

....then I read the amount the debt has increased by and nearly spilt my tea all over my lap!! - Frankly, it's a silly amount and I think the Ombudsman will agree - at worst you would need to pay the original debt plus nominal interes (i think the ombudsman use bank of england + 1 for borrowing and 8% for investments) - I hope they sort this for you

I know it drives me nuts that they have been pestering me for all this time...maybe its beacuse i always take the bait and reply to there letters telling them the same thing over and over again...

I haven't paid ANYTHING off. there was no point whilst my ex lived there as he would have satyed there even longer and muggins here would have been paying for HIM to live there whilst i was in effect homeless (not something i would do out of choice)

I'm not prepared to accept this and feel that they have been harrasing me all this time as i'm the easy target. i am a single parent and have NEVER claimed any benefits and worked my but off to survive financially on my own.

they just don't seem to be prepared to even take the slightest bit of notice of me or what i am telling them.

    Been thinking about this.

If we really are looking at a £3K debt turning into a £70K+ debt perhaps if any Mods are reading would Martin like to be made aware??
