Even if its spent, there will still be incidences where he would have to reveal ANY convictions - eg, if applying for an ESTA and for certain employers.

If it's the same trip every day, this person could save something by buying a season ticket for the whole route.

Buying a season for a month plus 2 or 3 days most of the time, starting on a Monday and finishing on a Friday, and also arranging to leave gaps for holidays, can be about as cheap as an annual ticket.

I remember watching the programme 'The Tube' and they monitored repeat fare dodgers on the tube and one day when they were sure he was a fare dodger, they confronted him at the station and showed all the evidence of his constant fare dodging. So if someone is constantly fare dodging they may be monitored and seem to get away with it for a while, until the transport police (or whoever) stop them and say 'you've been doing this for a while' and that's when it can get serious.

even if it's just a record for 6 years, these 6 years could impair his career for life.

e.g. he would not be able to get into any professional role, he;ll either be able to start his own business, freelance for a living or get into a manual job.

After doing whatever he can do in those 6 years he'll get stuck in that profession.

lets not forget he probably will never be able to get into legal, accounting or other professional financial role for life.

Ill swim up stream and say crack on. Hes obviously employed-his commuting daily. He knows the risks and asses them accordingly. My local station was the same until recently. The record wouldnt bother me either.

Thank you all for the info, in particular I didn't know that he could get a criminal record, I don't think he realises that.
I'm going to get all the info together and send him a nice info pack that hopefully he will make him see sense.
He's looked at several options, but will tell him about buying separate tickets in case he hasn't tried that.

If anyone know of a case of someone caught surfing/jumping the barrier it would be very useful (hard to argue you intended to pay for the ticket, I expect they would face the strongest penalties).

Since it's plastered all over all the fare-dodging deterrent advertising that has been around for years, he'd have to either be illiterate or completely stupid not to know that a criminal record can result. Pleading that it was a one-off won't work either, as they would simply review the CCTV (which is on every gate these days) and realise that he's a regular fare dodger.
He isn't suffering from lack of an info pack, he's simply in denial.
I don't know where in the country he travels, but in London and the South East there are hundreds of prosecutions each week.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You can always count on advice from people who know what they are talking about :D, like those who can read my friend's mind and tell me what he knows and doesn't know, as give a sound diagnosis of his psychological state.

As far as the argument that staff are going to spend hours looking at CCTV just to find out if my friend has been dodging fares regularly, this would probably help my case, maybe you can point me to a similar case where this has actually happened (unless it's just a guess and they 'may' rather than 'would' review the CCTV)?
