There could be 50 reasons for a fan failing, from a connector vibrating loose to motor failure to pet hair/dust causing it to overwork/fail prematurely to overheating because it's sitting on a duvet not getting the proper ventilation it needs.

This is why it's not as simple as a fan lasting x years, it will depend massively on the conditions as to whether it is an assembly/manufacturing problem or owner damage

I'm not sure which model you have, but on a couple of HPs, the fans seem to go a bit odd. This can be fixed with a BIOS update. Also check that it's not clogged up with dust.

Failing that, if you want a free repair, call the customer service centre - or send them an email. They might ask for a third party report, they might just say pay for it and if it's an inherent fault, you'll get it repaired free and your money back.

How do I do a BIOS update if it gives me an error message as soon as I turn it on?

How have you ascertained it's the fan that's the problem?

I have seen this before - as soon as you turn the laptop on, a message comes on screen saying that there is a problem with the fan. I think you can press a key to continue as normal

I think it might even be F1. I've also seen this message before - although not with no option to continue!

It's much more common with desktop machines with fans that aren't plugged in / aren't required / aren't spinning fast enough (i.e. if you have a watercooled CPU and don't need a CPU fan, but the motherboard gets worried when it doesn't have one running).
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

It gives an error message on startup. Also, at a computer place I did work experience at (Norwich Laptop Repairs), they'll do the whole job for me at £24 possibly including a report. If it's a manufacture fault, PCW would refund the costs. Also, it's a CQ56

No, If all they do is a report stating the inherent nature of the fault PcWorld will refund the cost of the report and either repair, replace or give a refund(which can be partial due to the use you've had).

If the repair place carries out the work you cannot claim for that, as you did not give PcWorld a reasonable chance of rectifying the fault.

So long as Norwich Laptop Repairs do the whole job for £24 and you get a reciept stating the report and inspection was £24 you can claim that off PcWorld who will refund it, though be warned if PcWorld dispute the fault or the report and want their own engineers to look at it, and the repair shop fixed the fault you would have no comeback .

On the balance of probability and costs involved, go down the Norwich repair route and then send the report stating the fault to PcWorld's head office or call centre office (it'll be forwarded onto the correct department) and see what happens. At worst you'll be £24 down.

My mother took the laptop to Norwich Laptop Repairs but was advised that trying to claim from PC World would be a waste of time because the only way to succeed would be to take legal action. So my mum took his advice and didn't bother with the report. Opinions?
