Motability versus buy a car?

Another question for you peterg...Was paying £10k Advance Payment, worth it? I apreciate that you had use of an expensive car for three years, but it did effectively cost you about £17k over the three years for the privilege (though this may reduce a little, if you bought and re-sold the car at a profit). It's a quewstion I am pondering right now - do I pay an Advance Payment of up to £4.5k (for a top-of-the-range Ford Galaxy)?
Don
Don, good question, £10K is a lot of money and as you say the whole three year lease has cost about £17K. If I asked my wife who drives the Disco on a daily basis if it was worth it, she would definately say yes. It is the best car we have ever had, and one the wife really likes. In fact we definately want another one, provided I can find the next £10K deposit and it continues to be suitable for my disabled son. It is a lot of car for the money! As for your Galaxy, we had one as our first Motability car back in 1996, I think I paid over £3K for the advance deposit. It depends on what you want out of a car, and how much you are prepared to 'loose' but if you can afford it go for it.
I am going to look carefully when the Disco comes to the end of the lease next year. I think it will still be worth more than £20K (an auto Disco 3 S with less than 25K miles). I can get a 13% discount on any new Land Rover on an occupational based discount scheme and will be investigating whether I am entitled to buy one VAT free for my son (does anyone know if you can do this?). That would bring the price down to something very reasonable. I would then try and get a PCP finance package at a good rate to see if I can beat the overall motability scheme price. VED would be zero rated regardless so it would be a case of finding some competitive insurance and maybe a maintenance package, but actually it may not be worth doing this.0 -
I got my Motability car which costs me £7000 for three years.
I also get £400 x 3 for insurance paid
£150 x 3 for RFT paid
£160 x 3 for servicing paid
£49 x 3 for RAC paid
Have had the car for four months and have already had one tyre because of a puncture which would have cost me £85.
total for 3 years = £2362 provided I don't need/puncture any more tyres.
The car cost £18000 new, so £20362 value for paying £7K over 3 years.
No hassle, no worries, all done.
I am sticking with Motability!0 -
we have a motability car for my husband and this is the third vehicle we have had but im afraid this is the worst one we have had it isa renault grand scenic which has too many problems to mention motability have been great and let us terminate the contract and get another vehicle we are going for the discovery 3 after many searches for another suitable car, if we was to buy a discovery seconhand we would have the worry of the servicing costs as well as if anything went wrong landrover are very expensive to repair this way we will have worry free driving and a quality motor which suits husbands needs,i think personally motability give you a good deal. Before you point fingers, make sure your hands are clean !;)0

Hi All,
I have read this thread and it has helped me decide to go for a new "57" reg Ford S MAX 130 ps Auto in June for delivery in September. I was looking at the AutoE Bid website. What do you think?
One thing concerns me. Can I only get one motor on the VFD exempt thing?0 -
Only one vehicle can be VED tax free per disabled person as there is only one certificate per person. The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

If the Discovery is not suitable or affordable, then you should try a test drive in a Picasso.
We tried a few cars (and I agree about the Scenic - haven't they heard of suspension??), but found the Picasso was the only car that suited both our disabilities (and had room for the scooter).

That could be a seperate arrangement as motability only contract hire on 3 yearly basis unless the mileage is very low then you can re-hire for another 3 yrs. To buy they prefer you to have the number of years on your purchase agreement equal or less than your award. It's very difficult to do if you have renewals every 3 years. The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

You can only extend the lease to 5 years if the mileage at the 3 year point is less than 7500. My mileage will be in excess of 20K.0
