Motability do offer you the chance to purchase your ex-lease car after the term, at a preferential rate.

    Lin :)

We always found this was an extortionate amount - alright cheaper buying from Motability rather than a garage, but why buy a car after you've hired it for 3 years - you may as well buy it from the start!!!

Regarding buying the motability car at the end of three years, I too thought they would ask a silly amount. However, having come to the end of our last motability scheme, we decided to purchase the car - at least to tide us over until we get the next one (probably 2-3 months).

Because all motability cars have to be metallic, and we asked for extras, AND the car has average mileage (36k), and been fully serviced including a full service and MOT at the end of the three years - the price they quoted was actually very good.

Indeed, by looking at the used car sections, they quoted me approx. £1k less than the market price. And in addition, they provide a one year warranty within the price, which I have checked IS transferable if/when you sell the car.

I guess you can never be sure what the purchase price will be, and would depend on how well the car wars maintained, the mileage etc.

Thats rubbish! We've had a mobility car for 6 years for my son. I was told by mobility that it can be used for anything that benefits my son. That includes me going to work (my wage benefits him), going shopping (the food benefits him) etc etc! Obviously, if he's not with me, then I don't use the blue badge (before anyone suggests it!)

Errm not anymore, if my husband uses the car to get to and from work motability can remove the car and we still have to pay up to the end of the lease . Check your tax disc, if it is a disabled tax disc then no you can't. That is what I got told by motability. It would be different if the disabled person i.e. hirer was working. The only exception is if the hirer (disabled person) directly benefits. I was told that as the hirer i can nominate someone else apart from hubby to drive therefore it should be available for MY use at all times.
Check the tax disc rules too.

    Disabled tax disc rules

Once you have your first free tax disc, subsequent applications can be made through the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency’s (DVLA) online and telephone vehicle licensing services, or at a licence issuing Post Office® branch or DVLA local office.
    What you need to know
the exemption can only be claimed for one vehicle at a time
you must pay vehicle tax on any additional vehicles
you can nominate someone else (a nominee) to drive for you. But the car must:
be registered either to you or your nominee
only be used for your benefit (for example shopping or getting prescriptions)
be insured for the nominee or anyone else who drives the vehicle for your purposes

I can only write what I was told yesterday by the motability customer services which was basically no, and if we do and he has an accident, yes insurance wise covered, but we would have broken motability agreement.

the dvla says the same, husband using the my disabled registered car for work (regardless of it being motability) when the disability tax disc is mine, he is driving that car illegally and could end up with points on his license and a fine.

Thats very strange! Maybe motability have got mixed advice. Our vehicle is for my son, but last week we had to phone the insurance to get it changed to business use as my partner has a temporary work relocation. It was changed with no problem and no cost, after we'd signed a form confirming my partner was the main earner in my sons household!!

Hapless is correct regarding the tax disc rules - I have my own car (not through motability) but as I receive car tax which has disabled on it, I can't let anyone else drive/use the car unless it is for my benefit.

TOBRUK, you say yourself in your last sentance "unless it is for my benefit" that could mean a whole world of things as long as it is close family(or a named driver) doing something for you whether you are in the car or not.

Hapless does your husband working not benefit you? as a household?, there is no way your husband will get points or fined unless he was using it to say go to the football with his mates or something like that(which does not benefit you).

According to the bloke at motability he should have his own vehicle and I should get a friend or neighbour put on the insurance so the car can be used as and when I need it or need it for something. As for his working benefit me, onlty in the fact he's not under me feet all day, financially no better off than on income support and carers allowance.
