Thank you everyone, lots of things to explore and look into. I did go 60 hours without Internet as I had a day off, pretty well for someone such as myself who usually needs my phone to be surgically removed from my hand! Only a few days to go and my contract rolls over again, then hopefully with a combination of your suggestions and a bit of discipline I shouldn't end up in trouble again!
Must say in particular very interested about alternatives to safari, I didn't know there could be any difference to data usage just by changing!
Thanks again, seems trivial now! Off to question all of you on the more important money matters I have now!0

I used to use opera on my old Nokia as it meant I could get by using 2g instead of 3g, saving data and battery.
Just did a quick check using opera on my iphone and a few pages from bbc's mobile site was originally 130kb but was down to 80kb. I guess with continued use you could make quite a saving.
Opera will only compress what you view in the browser but Onavo will compress all but encrypted web pages, video and voice over IP.
It's worth remembering that these apps take what your phone requests and compresses it in remote servers which raises questions about privacy. Reviews I've read seem quite positive though http://mobile.pcmag.com/?ref=288517&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pcmag.com%2Farticle2%2F0%2C2817%2C2393941%2C00.asp.0

Your right, but also what is being collected for future use?
Onavo's currently free, and they are getting a lot of data through their servers for free because of it, They use Amazon's cloud but are an Israeli company and server a worldwide userbase so who's privacy laws would apply.
They may say they protect your data but after a bit of use there will be a big file on each user, and as Twitter has shown recently all companies can be hacked. Apple got railed at for using some location services to help their searches, whereas here your giving everything away for free....0

The world of international private law is far too confusing so I'm not even going to contemplate an answer.
In any case, I don't use these things - I have no real need for them anymore. I suggested them as a solution to the OP's problem. I've outlined the potential problem with using them which is as far as my advice goes.0
