There is a away around this.

She does not charge them anything for the makeover or photograph and they sign something to confirm no charge was made for this. Then separately, she has a trip donation box, which the family and friends can put in any amount they wish to help pay towards her trip.

There is then no business, no liability to Insure, Home Insurance would not need to be made aware as no business ( no direct payment related to makeover/photograph) and no tax issues.

    I work for beer tokens...

I think most people who work in offices have need for this.

There was a case taken by a muslim worker for DL, who I think sued them for offering Wine, as an incentive prize, when it was against their religion. I think they lost, as it was obvious that the employer would have offered them an alternative, as they would have to someone who did not drink alcohol.

If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

It is quite simple. No payment for makeover. People can make a separate donation towards her trip if they wish. So then it is not a business.

This must be a moot point though? At what point are you asking for payment.

You often go to places e.g. gardens where entry is free but you are invited to make a donation even sometimes a suggested amount. How can you distinguish between a donation and a fee?

Crikey this is getting much deeper than I had dreamt!:mad:

A donation is voluntary (so she must be prepared that some people won't pay/won't pay as much as she wants).

    It is quite easy.

The British museum is free to enter, but there is a donation box suggesting a minimum donation of £5. If this was a mandatory fee then all of the people who pass the donation box without putting their money in, would be asked to leave. It is clearly noted as a donation box and not a fee.

All this person has to do is say that they are not allowed to charge anything upfront for tax purposes and to avoid people seeing it as a business being run from home. But if people like the makeover/photograph, any donation towards her trip would be gratefully received. Then she can say something that others have donated £10, but it is up to them.

Interesting idea....as it's that easy I think I'll try it with the guys that (used) to work for me and our (former) customers.

Getting rid of all that pesky PAYE/NI/VAT paperwork would certainly make my life a lot easier.

Does working for nothing remove the liability if a punters' hair turns green and falls out (or worse)? I don't think it does so if I get injured whilst visiting the British Museum then the normal rules of duty of care/negligence/liability apply

Next time your wife offers to give you a hairwash, some grecian 2000 to get rid of the grey bits, blow dry and haircut, make sure you do not give her any 'house keeping' money, just in case you go bald. You would not want to have a liability problem on your hands.

All of the products that are used these days are thoroughly tested by manufacturers and if there is a problem, then the person affected can take action against the manufucturer. This is a domestic situation and not a business that this thread is discussing.
