What happens if the other insurance company refuses to pay part or all of the bill? Won't 1888 find himself out on a limb?
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.
  • Someone hit my car. It was only cosmetic so I wasn't sure I was going to bother claiming due to the age of the car. In the end I decided to inform my insurance company to cover myself. They said that would put on hold otherwise I may need to pay excess.

In the meantime I got a letter from 3rd admitting liability. We dealt directly with them. They paid out after quote from garage. I was surprised how simple it was. I know that doesn't always work out like this but I would go through 3rd party if anything like this happened again

They cant refuse to pay once the guilty party has admitted liability.

Sorry, should have explained myself better!

I wondered what would happen if LondonEye's advice of "take it to the best garage" was followed, and the repair costs were much higher than the 3rd party insurer expected.......therefore they refused to pay (or pay all of it).

Missed McKeef's "the garage will email the insurer with the QUOTE". So actual repair costs are agreed in advance - all is clear. Thanks.

If you go via the insurance then it goes to one of their 'approved' bodyshops to get fixed.

Whatever the quote and final cost is makes no odds as the insurance company picks up the bill.

A friend of mine drove into the back of someone on the motorway and the estimate was way below the final cost as they didn't appraise it correctly. Had it been costed properly then the car would have been written off as the final bill was over half the cost of the car in the end but the insurance still picked up the bill for the work done.

The 5 pages of parts they needed was an interesting read though and there are plenty of pricey parts like intercoolers, etc hiding behind bumpers these days.

Only if you are happy with their suggested repairer.

You can insist on which repairer carries out the work on your car!
