Buying a car from a dealer

I bought a car from a dealer last week.It has a new 12month Mot on the car. It was Mot ed on the 19/12/2012 and failed with a list of problems. it was then mot ed on the same day at the same garage and passed with no problems. the dealer told me that all the problems had been rectified for the second mot. The day after i bought it it broke down and the alternator went. The dealer recovered the car replaced the alternator and i picked it up on Wednesday. They told me they had also flushed out the radiator and replaced the anti freeze.
today i took the car to a well known garage for a service, several problems were bought up including some that were on the failed mot list.
The car had 4 bald tyres
The front brake pads were completely worn and dangerous
The exhaust was hanging off
There was no anti freeze in the car
Do I have any come back on the garage i bought from as they are offering a car for sale with 12 months MOT that clearly should not have passed.

Did you not spot this before buying?

Was it Halfords or similar that old you all these faults?

ie Someone whose main business is tyres, brakes and exhausts?

Are you sure they are actually all faults. I'm struggling to see how a car with dangerous tyres, brakes and faulty exhaust got through a test drive OK. All of those faults at the same time should send alarm bells ringing while driving the car.

Or the 'well known garage' is actually a place that tells people this and then gets them to cough up for a new set of brake pads, tyres, exhaust etc...
(In case you missed what ILW was saying)

Someone is obviously trying one on however its not obvious right now who!

As Norman Castle said, how could you not spot it had 12 bald tyres?
There was no anti freeze in the car
Is that EXACTLY what they said... they didn't mark it as a concern as they couldn't a certain its age or didn't check it?

If you went to one of the national tyre nail companies (the ones who stick a nail in the sidewall and then show you it can't be repaired) like AT-Fords-Fit there is an equal chance they are lying...

Is there anti-freeze in the radiator? Did you look?
What service was it? If it was oil have you actually checked they changed the oil?
  • The guy from the garage who did the service is a friend of mine so hopefully he is being honest although he is from one of those tyre, brakes and exhaust places.
The tyres weren't great but looked ok to me but again I am no expert.

where was the 'well known' place you took it to? Was it kwikfit?

Then check them, you can use a tyre tread gauge or a 20p pence! (Just google)

Have you checked the oil has actually been changed?
Did you check the antifreeze... again really simple tests you don't need to be a mechanic to do and EVERY driver should know how to do if they passed a recent test... and if you had your license longer its still crazy not to know how to check this yourself.....

  • Yes it was Kwikfit.
I guess i assumed these people were honest but looking at it now maybe I have been a bit too trusting.

Since the car subsequently passed, presumably the tyres were changed....now they are worn out again???

The dealer sounds a bit 'iffy' to me
  • I have photos of the tyres exhaust and brake pads, should i go back to the dealer.
