gaming consoles and blu ray info

so i used to be wise when it came to consoles but last i bought was an original xbox. sooo what i need to know is:

does the ps3 or xbox 360 play blu ray ? do either also do dvd? and dvd upscaling to 1080p.

im about to get a new tv and blu ray player and just thought that if either of them do the blu ray dvd upscaling route might get one of them instead for a bit of gaming fun.

Also if you're thinking of getting a PS3 you might want to wait a few weeks,

Sony will probably be announcing the PS4 on Feb 20th
So you might get a good deal on a PS3 or pre-Order for a PS4 on that date ^_~

Xbox does not do Bluray as of yet.

The new xbox has strong rumours that it will have bluray.

But release dates for both are a good 12 months away at least, in time for xmas 2013 or early 2014

PS4 won't be out till this time next year so doubt there will be any specific PS3 deals any time soon.

And it probably never will. There was however an optional HD-DVD drive once upon a time...

Feb 20th there is going to be an officail announcment from Sony.

I suspect PS4 will be released in Japan end of this year, andthe rest of the world in 2014.
  • Word is 'holidays' 2013 for Japan and USA for the PS4, with the EU and rest of the world to follow in early 2014. So a year yet.

But to answer the question- Xbox 360 doesn't play blu-ray but will upscale DVD if you use the right cables. Be careful as there didn't used to be a standard set of ports on Xbox. Some had HDMI some didn't. Not sure about now, may have standardised it.

PS3 plays blu-ray and upscales DVD and all have a HDMI port. They are still one of the best blu-ray and DVD players out there.

The PS3 does both however your TV will also do upscaling/ deinterlacing as a screen can only show one resolution and anything above or below is either scaled up, bordered or cropped.

I echo AlecEiffel's comment that the PS3 is one of the better bluray players out there. There is always an element of personal taste in these things but by most peoples opinion you need to spend several times its price to get something better for blu-ray playback.

The only reason I bought a separate blu-ray player was because I have one of the original phat PS3s which has fairly loud fans which isnt the best for quiet scenes etc

Id imagine both would be out for xmas whether its 2013 or 2014 purely to generate more sales, well thats my theory anyway.
