you can't argue that all your equity is not worth anything.

Agreed, but neither can I easily give a breakdown including my house equity as it isn't in any of my financial plans, and nor will it be in the future.

To be honest, what I find most interesting about this thread is what people do and don't include and why.
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.

If we are only including money that we can get at instantly then I've gone from having a worth of almost half a million to having £21k. The rest is tied up in a house and in my pension, neither of which I could crystallise tomorrow. I didn't realise I was so poor. :(

I might be able to find some coins down the side of the sofa, so perhaps I could move up from £21k, but admittedly not very far.

My house forms part of my calculations because we live in a large family home that I will definitely be downsizing from, releasing (tax free) cash which will then help fund my retirement.

I was surprised that people were willing to state actual amounts (rather than percentages).

Isn't this an anonymous forum? Does it really matter if strangers know what you're worth, they don't know you and never will?

Yes but even so I wouldn't want to be seen as boasting, I think a little modesty isn't such a bad thing. I don't want to and can't be bothered getting pulled into a petty arguement by people who are jealous. Maybe this forum board is a bit more civilised than my usual one (debate house prices and the econmomy) and petty arguements are not so common here?

You can't go through life walking on egg shells, worrying about hurt feeling of those who take offence at the least thing. Fair enough if someone started this thread on the Debt or benefit boards or indeed started a similar conversation to strangers in the break room at work.

However this board is about finances and investing and the thread title is perfectly clear - if people are going to be offended by other people discussing their finances on a thread entitled "What are you worth", then perhaps they shouldn't be in here in the first place?

I personally find it useful to compare and contrast what I am doing with my finances with what other people are doing. I've learned a lot from these boards over the years and feel that if we are scared of hurting the feeling of a minority of under achievers, then we might as well close the financial boards and just have debt advice and years of tedious arguments about the minutiae of house price movements.

You've convinced me I will update my post, I needed to anyway as I had to correct the percentages after spotting an error in my spreadsheet.

How did I spend it? Well, I must admit that I can't account for more than a teeny fraction of it.

Between three of us we made about £250k in mid 80s pounds, which was good while it lasted. One of us (not me!) bought a brand new Porsche, decided that fully comp insurance was far too expensive, and then two weeks later tried to park it up a lamppost.

At least we all got this out of our systems early on!

no sorry i meant how did you make it lol , although by the looks of it you didnt have much trouble enjoying it :)

We wrote a couple of hit computer games during the boom times of the mid 80s. Of course, being young we thought that it would always be that easy.
