I've had it twice, second time whilst pregnant. First time I had it I went to A&E convinced that I'd broken a rib :o

Rest as much as you can, it'll take a fair few weeks to recover.

I had it a couple of years ago. The only thing that helped with the pain was diclophenac tablets. It took me a good 6 months to get over it properly. I didn't help that I didn't really rest and the only day I took off work was the day I was admitted to hospital.

My advice: take the drugs and rest well

    I feel your pain....

I had it 6 weeks after my dd was born - called the dr out and she was worried that it was DVT but luckily it wasn't. I couldn't move and was sooo cold (although temp was 44) and had to look after my dd as well.

It took about a week before I felt better after the antibiotics but weeks after that I felt normal again.

I then got it again the following year - I knew the symptoms, went to the dr who said there was no infection and wouldn't give me anything - I was back the next day to see another one who accused me of being an "armchair dr" but then did reluctantly agree with me and gave me pills. This episode wasn't as bad as the previous year probably because I wasn't as run down this time.

I am always on edge now if I get a bad cold or cough as I don't want it again

Hope you feel better soon - just rest and sit up as I found I just couldn't lie down.

Basically the pleuritic lining of your lungs become inflamed and in times come away from the lung wall for a period f time. Yes it is painful and do not let your dr put you on pansy anti biotics. Min 2000 mg per day to start to shift it. I've had it 3 times now as I'm asthmatic it can be a bit dodgy and hospital is sometimes inevitable. Keep yourself wam, well lubricated with warm drinks and wait. It's nota 2 weeks feeling like you'd rather die like some have said in my opinion but its not the most pleasant.

My DH had this in August last year. Once he was on the correct combination of pain relief and antibiotics he was in discomfort rather than pain within a few days, going from sat down to standing robbed him of breath for a good 5 minutes.

A&E diagnosed him and told him to keep taking OTC pain relief, it was the GP 3 days later that gave him the strong stuff.

If you're still in lots of pain, go back ask for something stronger.

DH ended up on a tablet to protect his stomach his anti-inflammatories were so strong.

He was off work for 3 weeks in total.

  • LOL at the copy and pasting going here. I'm sure the OP is well aware of what pleurisy is without ripping off google results as your own

Hope you feel better soon OP! I used to work on a respiratory ward and we had lots of otherwise fit and healthy people being admitted because pleurisy had just floored them.

Remember to drink plenty of fluids.
    Get well soon

He was probably very unlucky, but my friend's husband had this and then went on to get a DVT in his leg, probably because he'd been sat still for too long. So do remember to shift position and be as active as you can in the circumstances.

Loads of sympathy for you, hope you are over the worst soon!

This is really important. However ill you feel please move around as much as you can. Someone from my school died of a Dvt when she was only around 16 when she got the flu because of this.
  • I had it about 15 years ago. Started coughing in the September, was given antibiotics in the November, which improved for the length of time I was on them, still coughing at Christmas, saw doctor again and was told my cough was 'a habit' and I should simply try not to cough!! Went back to the doc's in the February, and saw a new doctor. It was like someone hit a switch - I had blood tests, a chest X-ray, and discovered it was in fact pleurisy. The doctor rang me at home that evening, and I burst in to tears - not because of the diagnosis, but because I knew I hadn't been well for months, and finally I knew I had something with a name that could actually be treated!!

I was signed off work for 3 weeks, and put on two lots of antibiotics and pain killers. I had a week in bed, a week on the sofa watching rubbish on the TV, and a week of pottering about. It was very painful until the antibiotics kicked in - the sharp 'stabbing' feeling spread from the ribs under my right arm round the front and back, until the constriction was all the way round and I felt I could hardly breathe at all. Very scary.

Hope you're feeling better soon. On a positive note, I've never had any recurrence, although at the first sign of a cough I do tend to go straight to the doctor's.

  • Thanks for those replies, this is the end of the 2nd week, and i've finished my anti biotics.

In myself i feel much better, i cough less, so there's not as much pain there, and there's not as much pain when i'm breathing, so all of that is good.
But i struggle in bed, when i lie down i feel like someone is pulling my lung, and it hurts when i get up, again like a pulling sentation, so i slide flat out of bed.
It's now discomfort, i've had 10 days of work, but hubby thinks i need another week, just to make sure, i'm fit.

have to admit it's not the best i've felt............and day time telly has done my head in,

    thanks

My Oh had this a few years ago and it was awful for him. He had a course of antibiotics but it didn't shift it. He ended up going back to the doctor who gave him stronger ones. He was in so much pain he slept sitting on the couch with 4 cushions on his knees so he could rest his head on them. It took him a good few weeks to get better and he ended up having a few months off work as he just wasn't strong enough to do anything much.

If your still in any pain at all then I think you should go back to your doctor and tell him/her. That's just my opinion but its better to be sure about this kind of thing.

I hope you feel better soon x
