Unfortunately this is pretty much the typical life of an un-neutered Tom cat. Either abandoned or left to wander in search of a female in heat - fighting with other cats for food, territory and poor un-neutered female cats. He never stood a chance.
What a shame he didn't come to your mum earlier.
Leukemia is a dreadful illness. He was never going to have either a great life or a gentle death. The vet and your mum did the only thing they could, put him out of his pain.
    RIP little boy cat.

Aw Spike, you have inherited your compassionate nature from your Mum! This poor cat really found the best people when he absolutely needed them the most. You did your best. The poor cat suffered but you stopped that and let him go to total peace. Sometimes it's the hardest decision, but agreeing to letting the vet give an animal a peaceful painless dignified end is the only acceptable thing to do. I've made that decision in the past, you've made it now. Don't be hard on yourself, the alternatives really were not good enough for that poor cat.

On a slightly brighter note, after months and months of nag nag nag nagging to my friend, she has now finally had her cat spayed. Unfortunately she has had female kitties before which ended up with unwanted litters.... but this time there will be no accidents. (I have one of her former kitties - she's only 3 years old and has already had five kittens and has been a granny for nearly a year. She's having no more kitties, she's been spayed.)

    Thanks for the replies :)
Feeling much better now, except one of my mum's cats is at the vets. He has a nasty cut on his leg, possibly from fighting but he should be fine.
Not sure when he got it as he was walking fine and didn't seem bothered by it.
  • At least you was there for him when he needed someone.

I know it is sad but at least he isn't suffering any more or spending days just waiting to die with a terrible injury.
