Feeling crap

Yesterday, my mum found a cat in her basement. He was dragging his leg so we took him to the vets.
Turns out he'd been hit by a car.
My mum has seen this cat before and he always seems to be injured in some way. Never this bad but we couldn't catch him anyway.
We got a call last night to say he'd tested positive for leukemia and there was nothing they could do.

I was only with him for an hour but it feels like I've lost one of my own cats. I'm just gutted.

I don't know who his owners are, if he had any. He didn't have a chip or collar. Apparently my mum saw him a couple of times with skin hanging from his face, he'd probably been fighting as he wasn't neutered either.

I just keep thinking he deserved to know people cared about him and I'm not sure he ever did.

Sorry for the depressing post, just had to get it all out.

Bless you thats so sad and I'm glad you posted. Getting your emotions 'out there' really does help and this cat was sadly just an accident waiting to happen. Well done for looking after him when he needed help the most.

We found a cat a few years back in our underground car park when i lived in a flat. It was walking/ falling over in circles and was in an appalling state. I took it to the vets and it had no chip or collar and there was no hope for the por thing so it was put to sleep :(

Just one of the reasons im so anti breeding.
    Ant.
  • Bless you Spike, I know it doesn't feel like it right now, but you've been that wee cat's guardian angel. Its had a peaceful end compared to that it would've had if it had been left on the street with injury and illness. I think you'll find that cat knew exactly what it was to be looked after (if only for a short while) because of you and your mum.

I agree with mollymoonlight, even though you only spent an hour with him you and your mum will have shown the cat that someone cared even if only for a while. There needs to be more people like you both in the world.

You showed that poor kitty more compassion in the short time you were with him than he probably had all his life, so bless you for that.

I will hug my three a bit tighter than normal when I get home tonight.

I know we did the right thing and in a weird way he was probably better off being hit by the car.
I think it's also hard because there is a very good chance he's my eldest cats dad. He wasn't neutered and he looks a lot like my boy but is probably a year or 2 older.

Thanks for the replies, they've really helped

Aww, what a sad story Spike but at least he is at peace now thanks to you and your mum. I'm sure that he knew you helped him and knew you cared even if it was only for a short time.
    RIP kitty.

So sorry to hear your story Spike :(

Reading your story though at least something positive has come out of this for the poor moggy.
I imagine there are some people in the world who would've turned a blind eye to him, just shooed him out of their home and left him to suffer.
Turning up in your mum's basement has helped him a lot, not only with the suffering from his RTA, but also with his leukemia. You almost wonder whether he could tell someone who cared would be in that house :)
You did the kindest thing possible for him, and while it's sad that you couldn't help to keep him alive, you at least helped to save him suffering.

    RIP to him.
