Returning to VM for broadband...up to 30mbps

Hi all

I have a install for broadband on Monday....up to 30 Mbps.

What speed could I expect really ?.

Anything above 15 would be good...that would mean I could stream from my PS3 and my daughter could also stream YouTube and not interfere with each other.

Just after people's expectations

You will connect to the network at 30mb (probably a bit over*), however your actual usable speed will depend on several things.
Namely how busy your local area is for cable - I've been lucky and never had a problem, but some areas (especially student areas) can be heavily/over subscribed and thus get problems with speed at times.

Also who and where you are connecting to will make a big difference - for example some servers will only let you download at X speed regardless of your connection speed (IE if you download a file from a website it might only let you download at 1mb, but you could still get another 29mb from other sites).

The only thing to really watch, is if you're going to be downloading a lot to do as much of it outside traffic management hours, or set your download client to a speed that won't affect normal browsing/gaming etc if you are managed (it normally kicks in for about 5 hours if you hit a certain amount of traffic during the afternoon/evening).

*IIRC VM tend to set the modem to a bit above the service speed (IE 120mb is set to 133mb)

worth noting that if you are streaming from your playstation to another device in the house, this is local network traffic, and not related to your broadband speed.

I've always had the advertised speed on Virgin cable, but watch for the rather primitive and clunky traffic management/fair use policy. basically, use more than 7GB between 10am and 3pm and expect a 50% daytime speed reduction. Use a further 3.5GB between 4pm and 9pm and expect an evening speed restriction.
Sorry, but the customer is not always right. Often, you're very very wrong.
  • this is my connection (Virgin 30 meg cable)

    Its important to note...

Speeds quote my VM are for wired connections, wireless could be significantly less.

    I'm on Virgin media 100mbs - I get 19-22 max.
Unsure whether it's cable or fibre-optic.
  • This is my connection with VM 30meg fibre optic.

It is taken on my wireless laptop, with son playing Black Ops 2 online (wired), daughter on smart phone (wifi) and wife on desk top on facebook (playing cafeworld )

    Saturday evening 9.30ish
