I froze our spring cabbage earlier this year, shreaded the cabbage, blanched and froze in bags.

Its alright but abit stringy to be honest. Mind you that might be what it would have been like fresh. Maybe my cooking.

I had a huge savoy cabbage sitting in my fridge yesterday so decided to cook the whole lot :D Anyway, there is loads of it and after doing a quick search it looks like you cant freeze cooked cabbage and that I should've frozen the parts I didn't cook. :(

Does this mean that the load I've got sitting in my fridge will be no good to freeze or shall I take a chance?

    Jenny,

My only experience of frozen cabbage has been a packet I bought from supermarket years ago and I didn't like it. Rather than throw it out, you could divide it into amounts you will use at one meal and freeze it, use it up as soon as possible. Something that will improve the taste when you defrost is a recipe my mil used years ago and I find it good: chop a small onion finely and mix with cabbage over a medium heat, when warmed through add a little cream and a some caraway seeds and stir through gently for a few minutes. If you have no caraways or don't like the taste, you could add a small amount of ground nutmeg or cinnamon...I prefer the nutmeg.

why not make bubble & squeak patties & freeze those ......

do you know why you should freeze raw?- is it the high water content?
I THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I Know

I froze some cooked cabbage and it came out like a massive block of green ice LOL. thawed it out and re-heated it and was OK if rather soggy.

I've just bought some green spring cabbage home from my allotment hoping to freeze it as i have a bit of a glut and i need the space for something else.

I've just read my freezer book and it only tells you how to freeze 'hard' red or white cabbage. My cabbage looks like 'greens' can you freeze it?..or will i end up with an uneatable soggy mess?

Don't know about freezing but if you cuts into very thin shreds and deep fry it you have chinese takeway seaweed!! Drain well on kitchen roll.

    Hi kippers,

We have an older thread on freezing cabbage that should help so I've merged your thread with it to keep all the replies together.

Hi, I have got a spring cabbage in my veg box and dh doesn't like it - can I cook it (steam or boil?) and then freeze it in portions perhaps to use for soups etc. (also to try to sneak some goodness into the childrens meals)
