I cannot see ".NET Framework 4 Client Profile", see copy of add/remove above

Look again - it's between Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007.

I removed the suggest file -.Net etc and was asked to restart the computer, which I actioned, however the computer failed to start and when I started manually, a start up repair programme started, ran for a while and is now suggesting using system restore.

Do I use system restore or not?

Have you run antivirus and malware scans just on the off chance.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I am in the process of trying to tidy up the laptop, so have already run malwarebites, superantispy, eusing and spybot etc.

I had done all I could to tidy it up and decided to look into why it would not update.

    Thanks,

Go into Programs and Features and uninstall .NET Framework 4 Client Profile. Instead of restarting see if you can now get updates again.

Assuming you can now update again, install .NET 4.5 from here...

    http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9810134

I did point out not to restart, although the .NET 4 client profile has no bearing on startup. It's starting to sound like something a little more sinister is going on there.

I did try another update but did not work. Its better than it was when I got it yesterday, so I will leave it as it is.

    Thanks for the help.

Everything looks ok as far as WU services etc go.

Can you actually get to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com ?

If you want, download DDS from the link below and save it to your desktop:

    Link

After you've downloaded it and saved it to your desktop:
    • Double click DDS to run it.
    • When it's finished, DDS will open two logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop.

Copy & paste the contents of just DDS.txt for now and post it here (you may need to split the log over separate posts)
