I cannot get it to update and get the following message --
I tried to download a repair tool but had to pay for repair to be done, is there a free way to do it?
Thanks,
Fortyfoot

Go into Programs and Features and uninstall .NET Framework 4 Client Profile. Instead of restarting see if you can now get updates again.
Assuming you can now update again, install .NET 4.5 from here...

Download Farbar's Service Scanner from the link below and save it to your desktop.
LINK- Right click FSS.exe & choose "Run as Administrator" to run it.
- Check (tick) the following checkbox
- Windows Update
- Click Scan
- When finished, notepad will open. Post the contents in your next reply.

side note have you un-installed "Microsoft Security Essentials" recently?
Removing MSE has been known to mess up some Windows services (i.e. update and firewall related services).Laters

Not my laptop. I think it unlikely.
Although I cannot see MSE in add/remove programmes.

I cannot see ".NET Framework 4 Client Profile", see copy of add/remove above, only two entries begining with "N"
