Google wallet identity problem

I recently purchased a nexus 7 & after inputting my card details & them getting rejected, google have sent me an email wanting me to upload my passport picture page & something else to verify.

Absolutely pathetic. Never had to do this in 10years of using eBay, PayPal, apple, online stores etc

Anyone had this too & can it be trusted?

Edit- the mail was threatening saying 'they may delete my new gmail account if you don't do it within 3days'. Not a 'hey welcome to your n7, gmail & the world of android' as I expected.

Are you sure it's from Google? Found a discussion elsewhere about a similar problem - a request for identity verification - but this apparently only appeared when the poor sod tried to log in.

Asking for proof of ID over email is a big no-no.
  • It was this kind of email

Not read all of it, but seems like goggle messing around or being incompetent.

Apparently if I go to amazon & download the app, my amazon & goggle bank details will link?

Edit- ok so I can post URL. So type in google Checkout compliance into their search engine & some people had the same thing
  • Yeah I had that type of email when trying to purchase a 69 pence app. Tried 3 cards with the correct details.

At the moment I have a tablet and google don't want my money and my tablet is rendered half useless. Pathetic google
  • Many have had this problem.
Some are saying its genuine, details need faxing or attaching via the form due to google stringently complying with European legislation with money laundering.
    Still not comfortable

    Like I said:
Are you sure it's from Google?
Under Fix a Problem in Wallet Help:
Am I being scammed or phished?
Legitimate messages sent by Google may ask you to click a link to verify your email address. If we're unable to verify the information in your Google Wallet account, we'll request additional documentation from you by sending an email from noreply@wallet.google.com or noreply@Wallet.l.google.com. This email will ask you to sign in to your Google Wallet account and submit documents that verify your billing details. Google won't ask you to provide this sort of information until you've successfully signed in to your account.

    Edit: ...crikey!
  • I've never used gmail from my mobile but the address starts with checkout-compliance@

    And links too

    Uh-huh. How does it end?

Wait a mo... Google Checkout Merchant? Are you trying to sell something?

    I'll double check

As far as I know I signed up for wallet not merchant as I don't need to sell anything

Others have had the same problem with wallet
  • Having ruled out the possibility that you've inadvertently signed up for the wrong thing, I can see only two possibilities:
    • Google have given you the wrong link
    • The email itself is fake.

I've had to do that to verify my ID with google in the past due to my name.

It might be because your name *might* contain words which some may find offensive (i.e. if your name was "Bob Sexton" the filters would flag the "Sex" in "Sexton" and flag it for review.

Or it might be you've tried to register the card and gotten rejected so many times their system might think you're not the real owner or are using fraudulent details.
