european car insurance

Like me many people drive over to Europe to visit their caravan.

But are they really covered on the roads for an accident.

Eg

Say if you had an accident on European roads. The most important thing after safety, is that you get you car towed back home to a garage and inccuring the minimum penalty to you. In other words, the excess that you have to stump up.

OR

Repaired straight away so that you can carry on with your plans again at minimum cost to you!!

Well my renewal quote (LV) came in and I pay an extra 19.90 English quids for European cover. At the end of the day, if you are driving to Europe some time that year then this is the most important question you ask. This unknown to some people gives me comprehensive cover abroad for a year. Meaning, if I have an accident on the roads, regardless who's at fault, the above is covered and I can carry on with my plans.

I then went to the comparison sites and got a cheaper quote. 150 English quids cheaper (AXA) and I get European cover for 90 day as standard.
They couldn't quote me European cover until I took out the policy. I wanted the European quote to see if it was worth taking out the policy!! Why would I take out a policy if the cover was going to be expensive. AAAaaarrh

NOTE: Any policy that offers European cover as 'standard' is only giving you '3rd party'. Meaning if you have an accident they will NOT cover your car until it is proven in court that it was the other persons fault. so your car sits in the layby till then. They cover NO legal fees abroad as well.

Getting expensive??

Now Are you covered abroad to visit your faithful caravan like me??

What are you getting at European Comprehensive cover or European Breakdown.
  • Just cover to drive on the roads in case of a unplanned car manoeuvre, which will put a crimper on the days plans.

LV seemed not the best but the one and only!!

There are plenty of Insurers who provide the same cover as you have in the UK as they do in Europe for free. It typically limited to a certain amount of days per year eg 90 for free

Aviva through a broker even include Breakdown Cover while your in Europe for free, you pay if you want UK break down cover.

I would check that Axa policy if I were you. They may have different variants, but on mine they include cover for periods up to 3 days free, but if you're going for a longer trip it costs a bit extra.

But I'm glad to have seen the comment, as I'm going to find out whether I can get mine altered

    Nonsense.

I was in an accident in Germany a few years ago which was my fault. My insurer paid the cost of the temporary repairs to get home plus finishing the job off, which involved some duplication of work and material. And they would have settled up with the other parties too, as I never received any communication from other people.

And a year and a bit ago a car hit mine while it was parked. I wasn't stuck in a layby afterwards. Well the damage didn't prevent me moving, but there was no need to wait weeks. All I had to do was send my insurer a copy of the form we mutually filled in at the scene, and the other party's insurers paid up later without any court case.
  • I put the post on because I spent all day trying to beat my renewal quote and get European insurance with it. The ones who never offered the cover had a Phenominal ridiculous quote. With LV, who my renewal was with not only was the quote half the price but they offered full comprehensive insurance whilst abroad and no one else did.

I even went to a comparison site which gave the choice of European quote as extra, but the annual cover was stupid.

With regards to the accident in Germany, who was the company that provided you the insurance? As the reason I started the post was that people can offer up the insurance company so people can give them a call, so they like me don't have to waste all day searching.
  • I see dacouch mentions the free 90 days. I guess that was from Aviva. But is the free 90 days fully comp in Europe? I'll be surprised if it is.

But as I say the annual cover from Aviva would be alot more than LV.
  • All I'm saying folks is that after a whole day of fruitless searching to save me pennies. My original insurer wanted 500 of my English quids to cover my 2011 C class with Fully Comp European accident cover for the whole year.

Not one post on this site discusses what I am trying to do. If you have a descent deal with the Euro cover then post it here.

    That's it.

If you're old enough (50) SAGA include 12 months comp cover in the EU with their comp policy with no extra charge, and no need to notify them when you go.
In addition all policies issued in the EU (Including Britain) must include the minimum legal cover for driving anywhere in the EU.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !

Why would I post that if it was wrong?

If you use comparison sites, the Insurers appearing strip their cover to the bear minimum as people on such sites buy on price so to appear in the top three they offer very basic cover.

There are quite a few companies that automatically include foreign use for the same cover free of charge
