As half term ends on Sunday, and next week is our last week to make money for February, I thought we could have a mini challenge to spur us into March?

If you want to play, absolutely no pressure, purchase something for under a fiver, could be 20p, anything and see if you can sell it to make much more than what you bought for it!

I know MoneySpider in the past has been lucky enough to pick up jewellery very cheaply at carboots/jumble sales and taken it to be valued and found she made a pretty profit :D

So how about it? Spend as little as you want, 5p, 10p, etc from the charity shop and see if you can sell it on to make more money, ie Facebook sales, ebay sales, sell to a friend, cash in to music magpie, etc.

    .

    Great little challenge Aesop :D
Infact now is a good a time as any to reveal my plan i have been thinking about for ages but working on seriously since Jan, hence why im not around as much recently.
Im going into 2nd hand trading, i've been looking into all the ins and outs of becoming self employed in this area, and turning my love of all things retro and collectable into a small business :D.
Im currently in the process of decluttering my own collections and junk to fund my start up.
I see it has having nothing to lose by trying, The jobs market round here, like everywhere i suppose is Awful. over 1500 people applied for 8 jobs going at Cost@ coffee the other day :(

I read a quote that started me off :
Build your own dreams or someone will hire you to build theirs.

I don't expect to make a multi million pound income :rotfl: but if i can make myself a decent part time wage by working full time hours for MYSELF i'll be happy :D

So back to your challenge, The hardest thing to learn is your not buying for yourself!! so something may not be to your taste personally but that doesn't mean its not going to make a profit.

Look for quality and well made items, leather goods are a good place to start, shoes and handbags are easy enough to find cheaply.

    Good luck!!
Oh and i know Aesop posted a few days ago but incase anyone missed it....

    FREE LISTING THIS WEEKEND!!
Build your own dreams ~ or someone will hire you to help build theirs
    £10 a day = £335.99 Road Kill Rebel #50 =12P
  • Thanks Aesop

My youngest son who is 17 has decided he wants to ebay so he has a pile already growing in his room. I told him to wait until there is a free listing weekend and then he can put things on at a higher price without the fees.

So guess what I will be doing all weekend :)
  • Love the challenge idea Aessop. Will give it a go (a bit like fairies old double your money thread which I never got round to starting).

I take your point re: multiple payouts from shopping incentive cash back offers. No idea how they could know who applied to which site for what though. I guess there is a risk that they pull the whole thing if they end up loosing £.

My phone is an iPhone 3G - if anyone can offer advise re how to upgrade tho IOS that would be fab! From what I can gather it can't be done.........which seems a little nuts and makes me think that I may be wrong!!!

Really exciting business idea monkey - go for it! You have nothing to loose. Can't believe number of applicants for 8 jobs in costa - wow.

Well done to those making target already.

Taking the kids to a national trust place today then attacking eBay listings when I get back. Have a fab day folks!
  • Great idea Aesop - i already have my silver dish bought for £4 and my money boxes bought for £2 which i was planning on adding to ebay and/or taking to car boot over the weekend anyway so count me in :D

Just got my £25 voucher in from swaggers today and will be continuing to swag away - so far have another £5 worth of points plus a few hundred towards 2nd fiver - not sure i will make it to £50 swaggers vouchers in feb but i will keep trying ;) already have made more than before on there in feb than any other month :D

Have ebay listings ready to rock the free listing weekend and am going to sort more car bootie stuff today as well! A busy prep day for me!

Love this idea Aesop, need to get some mojo moving - I am desperately lagging behind in my quest this month :(

I also seem to have heard a rumour or two of free listing on ebay again this weekend ... keep meaning to dig some stuff out & try it but then I read about people having bad experiences and it puts me off again. Not to mention that I have no idea how to go about setting p&p amounts .. all I've got is a basic kitchen scale (non digital) and some things defo won't be suitable to weigh on it.

Ooops, almost forgot ... £40 to add to my tally for Audit/MS jobs yesterday.

Aw Angel, ebay is one of those things that just has some difficulties at times - most of us (despite the complaining) use it regularly and make a reasonable amount of cash too! I hate it, but i still use it!! If you are worried you can use recorded postage which reduces the chances of something going missing - even if it does you can still claim from the post office with a proof of postage which is free.

Re the postage, if things are big/heavy have you bathroom scales or even a wii? weigh yourself with and without the item will give you the weight :D or you can weigh things at the post office if you can be bothered to carry back and forth. alternatively if you have common items to sell most of us would have a good idea of the price to post things like jeans, books etc :) try not to let our negativity put you off! xxxx

Thanks Fairy, it never occurred to me to weigh like that :o I really didn't want to have lug a whole pile of stuff up to the PO just to weigh it all ... don't think they'd have been too happy

A bit spooky considering Aesop's suggested mini challenge... happened to catch end of Bargain Hunt earlier - one team bought this furry Cockerel Head Teapot cosy for £25 .. it sold at auction for ..... £250 :eek: I nearly fell of the sofa :rotfl:
