I drove a 1.8 Petrol Zafira for a week when my diesel was in the garage and it was nowhere near as nippy as the 1.9 Diesel (2006).

The 1.6 petrol was worse, but if all you want is a family town runabout it wouldn't be so bad.

Also, the 1.8 petrol gave about 33mpg whereas I get 49mpg for the 1.9 Diesel. Whether its worth paying the extra cost for as diesel depends on your use and mileage.

The 1.8 has 138BHP, as opposed to either 120BHP or 150BHP in the diesel variants. Often a diesel will feel quicker due to the torque with them and a petrol will need revved more.

From memory its the engine they used to fit in the Toyota Celica - the 1.8 VVTi and it likes to be revved.

I'd have thought 36mpg on average would have been more likely - perhaps if you'd had it a few days you might have settled in to its driving style - certainly thats the sorts of numbers i've seen on them.

OR the one you were driving might have had a fault.

I've never averaged 49MPG in any 1.9CDTI we've had in - usually 42mpg to 45mpg. The last one - a 120BHP CDTI Life, we were seeing about 42MPG.

I know we're both only going on our experiences and yours definitely seem different than mine.

1.6 petrol in something as heavy as a Zafira doesn't strike me as being particularly sensible in all honesty.

GM using a 'Yota engine? Really?

What other Vauxhalls use that engine? If that's true I'll keep an eye out for cheap bargains, that 1.8VVTI is a fantastic little lump.

EDIT: Nah, that's not right. The 1.8 is a standard GM Family 1 -- ordinary at best.

Actually you've put a doubt in my mind now - i know that they used to VVT-i monicker which is from Toyota. I was sure its Toyotas, but i'm struggling to find proof...

... i might have dreamt it!!
