What is a dmf?I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Dual Mass Flywheel I'm guessing which can be a weak point on diesel cars although it's difficult to tell how much of a problem they are, I've had three VW based cars with them and so far no trouble while others warn not to buy a diesel VW for the DMF. I don't know how good or bad the DMF's Vauxhall use are.

The DMF was fitted from the 06 Mk2 onwards and it will be designated 1.9 CDTI.
The DMF should be considered a wear and tear item and they seem to last around 100K miles. They also have a timing belt.
I guess ensure both have been done and you have seen evidence thereof if mileage is over 80K, otherwise budget £600 and £250 respectively.
Personally, i'm not a fan of the engine. I've come across many in the motor trade and they are prone to DPF problems, injector problems, as well as turbo problems, engine management lights on, etc.
Good ones tend to be really good, bad ones are really bad.0 -
The DPF is a reason not to buy one.

Or £487 for the same (Delphi) part from carparts4less.co.uk, plus 30 minutes to replace it.
All current diesel cars have DPF as standard, this is to help with meeting Euro4 emissions. DPF should be good for 120K+ miles, unless the car is driven mainly short distances (in which case you should not be getting a diesel-powered car), or thrashed, or the engine is using significant amounts of oil, or there are problems with fuel injectors."Retail is for suckers"

We have a 1.9 Astra CDTi which I believe is the same gearbox. My advice, don't.
We knew about the timing belt issues and made sure it was changed at 50k what wasn't so well known to me at the time was the gearbox bearing issues with this engine.
On Friday the mass flywheel failed, taking with it the clutch and gearbox. There is currently some debate as to which failed first between the flywheel and the gearbox but either way the car is currently in our local garage having a rather pricey recondition.
Now, google 1.9CDTi M32 gearbox problems and all becomes very clear indeed.
I'm told the air con pump will be next to go, followed by the Turbo. TBH I think we are going to get it back and trade it in.0 -
Maybe an engine to avoid then.Anyone had any experience of the petrols are they riddled with problems?0

The one to have in the petrol range is the 1.8.
Great engine, relatively frugal.0 -

I drove a 1.8 Petrol Zafira for a week when my diesel was in the garage and it was nowhere near as nippy as the 1.9 Diesel (2006).
The 1.6 petrol was worse, but if all you want is a family town runabout it wouldn't be so bad.
Also, the 1.8 petrol gave about 33mpg whereas I get 49mpg for the 1.9 Diesel. Whether its worth paying the extra cost for as diesel depends on your use and mileage. We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
The earth needs us for nothing.
The earth does not belong to us.
