GAIM And Kopete are the main ones.
GAIM is a Gnome app, Kopete is a KDE app. Both are very good, I prefer GAIM of the two.
If you've picked a distro such as Ubuntu it'll come with GAIM.
Which distribution of Linux are you using?
Edit - both GAIM and Kopete can handle MSN, Yahoo, ICQ etc... they can do all-in-one sort of thing."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

Ubuntu and isnt it good?0

Ubuntu will have GAIM installed by default.
Look up the top of the screen.
Applications > Internet > Internet Messenger (or similar, I've renamed mine forgot what it is by default).
Or
Press Alt + F2
You'll get a popup window. Type "gaim" and press Enter.
If you want to try Kopete. Either go to:
Applications > Add/Remove...
In the window that pops up, search for "Kopete", and tick to install it.
Or an easier method and one worth getting used to:
Applications > Accessories > Terminal
Copy the following and paste it into the terminal Window (you have to press Ctrl+Shift+v)sudo apt-get install kopete
The press Enter. It'll ask for your password, type it in and press Enter. Watch it install

Gone for the pre-installed one. Just what I need!0

Whilst on the subject, do you know of any vnc application? I use ultravnc on my windows boxes.0

Hmmm, I've not got that far. I've only breifly used Remote Desktop with Ubuntu.
You can install regular VNC. It wouldn't be secure so I'd recommend setting up SSH too.
I'll see if I can find a How-To, there's bound to be one.
Got one:

I didn't find gaim very good as it didn't have as many features as msn. If you want something that is closer to msn messenger try amsnHad a thrifty wedding 17-06-10

I have 10 linux boxes running on a WINDOWS network and use ultravnc to remote desktop. As I remember you just need to configure Remote Desktop in preferences or administration on the linux machine to allow remote connection and bob's your uncle

PS Back to Gaim, is there anyway to get it to sign in when I start the machine? I keep having to remember to turn it on!0
