What if the OP was able to present a notarised death certificate? That should alleviate any suspicion which the staff may have.

My understanding is that is what they will ask for.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

That's right - but such a document can be very difficult, or impossible, to obtain at short notice especially from another country. For a flight to Europe you've got to ask whether the possible savings are worth the effort involved.

I often have to book "last minute" flights to Europe for work and while the fares are higher than they would be if bought a month in advance they usually aren't too extreme - for example, you can fly from London (LGW) to Barcelona on Easyjet tomorrow morning for less than £100 one way.

Yes as it's February, the flight is unlikely to be full. In the summer school
holidays it will be a lot more than £100, at least double.

If you know anyone who works for BA, you could try getting a standby ticket. Of course, this wouldn't be good advice if you have a specific flight which you need to get on desperately.

If you do know any BA staff you may be able to get a friends and family ticket or hotline as its sometimes called, that is a reduced fare on the normal published fare with the same rules.
You cannot get a BA standby ticket unless your on the staff's nominee list for staff travel and that would be difficult to achieve at short notice if at all, at least that's how it was when I was there and if you think about it it is unlikely that it has changed otherwise everyone would be flying standby on BA.
If it has then I will be catching up with my pals at BA very soon.

Sad that this is no longer a thing that is easily accessible for people in a time of need.

Being such a melting pot of Europe, the UK-based airlines should really implement bereavement fares.

I called a few airlines and all of them told me "no". In fact, some of them totally did not adjust their tone when I called — for example, ended the phone call with a very fake, but a happy sounding: "Byeee!"

Odd. I fear that people don't trust each other in the UK anymore, and just assume I'm some kind of scammer. Crazy.
