Congratulations Tink. I do feel for you though on the morning sickness. I couldn't bear the smell or taste of anything up to about 16 weeks. I can't remember what I fed the family, but for yourself another thing which helps the nausea is ginger, so ginger biscuits might make you feel less sick. And morning sickness is such a misnomer - it's usually all day :(

I ended up constantly sniffing olbas oil as everything made me gag.
I don't know if to could tolerate this but maybe in order to teach your H to cook you manage with some Vicks smeared under each nostril?

I also second the idea of sucking on a lolly, can't sniff while you suck ;)

Hi thanks for the replies I went to Iceland this morning (hardly any food smells as it's all frozen) and got some meat joints you put straight I the oven some frozen veg etc too so he just has to sort some form of potato - also I think he must have been panicked too as my friend called round with a shep pie and spag bol for the freezer, think word is spreading as my mum said when she does a roast on Sunday she will put another chicken in and strip it for me and make extra mash! How lovely is that? think when I can get back to cooking I'm going to have to make some goodies for them. Hubby has said he is going to learn a few basic things to cook (I've just always done it) as I think he didn't realise how much I do cooking wise. I think I'm worried about setting him free in a supermarket as he would spend a fortune and buy brands and offers galore too, we would be eating steak every night with chocolate dessert and Ben and jerrys ice cream lol

Thanks again everyone will try to train him but it's just easier to do it myself - off to look up something that he could cook then will write a shopping list and see if he can get that far!

    Congrats :)

I had sickness throughout my pregnancies too. DH helped out by taking over cooking when he was around. Otherwise there was quite a bit of beans on toast (this isn't expensive at all), muffin pizzas (quick assemble job) with baked beans or veg, jackets as you say, and some freezer stuff like veggie fingers/burgers with frozen veg microwaved quick. Couscous and noodles are easy - just chuck some frozen veg in too, pour over boiling water from kettle, cover and leave to soak 10 minutes then mix in tinned pulses. Pasta of course, add jar of sauce or we just liked (and still do) oil and pinch of salt.

It isn't for long - you have plenty of time to go back to more elaborate meals. As long as things are still fairly balanced. My second pregnancy, I fed my eldest quite a bit of "on-toasts" for meals so stuck to cereals for breakfast to avoid repeating.

    Stay well x

  • Hi, I had constant morning sickness in my pregnancies too. In the end I resorted to buying some acupressure bands that go round your wrist and found that although I still felt slightly nauseous it made it a lot better. Good luck!

Buy the CBeebies I Can Cook book or similar childrens cook book and let him cook with your DD - the recipes will be simple but tasty and they both learn a valuable skill and spend quality time together. Win Win! :)
  • i TOTALLY know what you're going through!! when i was pregnant with my twins, i was sick ALL THE TIME!! the smell of garlic or hotdogs especially would send me over the edge!! but i found that "cold" foods weren't as smelly as hot foods. salads, sandwiches, cereals, cut up raw fruits and veggies were fine!!!! also, baked chicken with no added spices seemed to be okay. boiled eggs were good too, but i couldnt be in the kitchen when they were boiling - i would eat them after they had been in the fridge over night!! :-)
for hot foods could you do grits or potato soup??
just remember that it's not forever and that your husband and kiddo will be just fine!! :-) a few unbalanced meals aren't going to hurt anyone!! as long as their bellies are FULL!! :-)

good luck to you by the way!!!!

This is where online shopping will help - work out a meal plan between you, including some easy stuff & something a bit more challenging to him (curry, pie, roast with chicken portions etc) and then you do the shop online. Your chosen supermarket deliver it all to you, and you can then educate your hubby in how to shop without spending too much money ;)

hi i have lots of sympathy for you i was the same on my middle pregnancy couldnt food shop because the smell sent me straight to the toilet raw meat was a big no no so there was no roasts in this house.

My 9 yr old can cook better than my hubby but i found if i did wriiten instructions for things like sausage casarole and cheese and potato pie, stew is easy just throw everything in a pan really helped.

another thing i found helped i kept a packet of biscuits by the bed before i got up in the morning i would eat a few always keep your stomach slightly lined little and often the sickness was always worse if i let my stomach get empty not that i ever fancied anything.

at least it wont be for much longer (hopefully) mine passed at 11 weeks best of luck its all worth it in the end even if u feel like c**p at the mo.(excuse spelling spell check aint working.)

ok our shopping bill has been cut and cut we are on £120 a month but this is for everything all food, packed lunches for work, cleaning items etc for me Dh and DD4 I'm pregnant too - we managed ok so far but I'm finding in order to afford all my shopping things like meat just cannot make it onto the meal planner - I won't eat really cheap meat like value sausages etc I'd rather go without but I'm struggling for ideas. Mince bulked out is about all we can afford now and I'm getting a bit bored with mince for tea. I know so many people on this site manage on so much less so any meal planning ideas would help me out.

    we normally have
    chilli
    spag bol
    shepherds pie
    chicken pie
    sausage and mash
    toad in the hole
    roast dinner
    chicken curry
    chicken pitas
    casserole
    jacket potato & tuna

the chicken meals are if I get a big chicken and roast it, it will do 2 meals and a lunch. Hoping if I can get some ideas we can still eat these but stretched out. Thanks to anyone who replys.
