Three billing problem...

Hi
Myself and my partner claimed the retention offer given by 3 last year which covered 100 minutes and 100 texts for six pounds which you paid at end of contract. There was no minimum term. We saw it as a stopgap as we tend to need more minutes than that.
After the first bill we realised that they were taking the charge for the minutes that we went over off the credit to cover the contract despite having our DD details- it says 'thank you for paying by DD' at the bottom of our bills. This was for both our accounts.
My partner called today to cancel the contract and was offered a retention deal that he excepted. He then got a call back saying he owes them over a hundred pounds; mine would be even more than that. Because 'DD was not working'.
I suppose it would have been sensible to call them earlier regarding this but as it was for both accounts we presumed that it was the way they did it, hoping that we would keep paying the 20 a month rather than cancelling. I think it is very unfair to expect us to pay all this in one go; had it come off each month as we expected it would have easier (and, in truth, we would have used it less, most likely getting other contracts earlier).
Has anyone else dealt with this? Three are calling him back tomorrow.
Thanks for any info.
