you white people can rationalise and justify all you like but put yourself in that guy's shoes, a legacy of slavery and oppression and now taunted by a crude supposedly jokey slogan on a van, have you learned nothing from the riots
Totally agree with you. I saw a sign the other day with "No Haggis left in this chip shop overnight" on it.
Bloody racists.
(note, sorry for stupid reply whoever it was that got upset about the nuts)0 -
Yes as Tiddly Winks says maybe we should state our own race and colour before being able to comment on matters of discrimination!
Racism is insidious and endemic don't pretend it has been solved, it is more subtle these days, like in this case
Whatever next, a special needs minibus with "No cabbages left in this vehicle overnight" on the back? would also that be acceptable in the frankie boyle school of vehicle sign writing?
Or driving past your local primary school at home time, roof down in your convertible with gary glitter songs booming from the stereo? is that ok too?
Where does it stop?squaaaaaaaaacccckkkkkk!!!! :money:0 -
Are cabbages, as in the green vegetable, commonly left in a special needs bus in the course of it's day to day operation... no. In that context it is only used as a slur with no other meaning.
Are bananas commonly left in a fruit van as part of it's day to day operation... why yes indeed they are.
Hell you could argue that the term "fruit van" is offensive if you employ a driver, or pick up a passenger, who happens to be a gay man. It's just that when you take it to that level it all gets rather silly and discredits the whole idea of avoiding causing offence.
Where does it stop indeed...
(I agree with you that Frankie Boyle is a douche, however)0 -

For the record I wasn't upset about the nuts thing. I only pointed that one out because it's a common one that people bring up as an example of stupid health & safety warnings that point out the bleedin' obvious when it's not actually a valid example of such.0 -
does the same job as the cardbord cut out of a police officer in lidl...not a lot0

Well I always though that the throwing bananas thing is because bananas are associated with Africa, not because a stereotype exists that black people prefer bananas*. Personally I don't think the actions of football hooligans should be allowed to create a precident.
That said, if this really is a thinly veilled racist message, it explains why the Daily Mail saw fit to publish it as news!
*I thought that particular stereotype involved watermelons.
Really?
Even as a kid I knew what they meant.0 -
The riots that were in response to a white policeman shooting a black person... not even vaguely similar to the word !!!!!!! appearing on a fruit van.
This is the kind of thing that gives genuine political correctness a bad name. Yes there is plenty of oppression, racism and unfairness in this world which needs to be addressed, but when it's taken to extremes it gives the whole concept a bad name. Political Correctness is now a dirty word thanks to crap just like this.
Take, for example, that Daily Mail staple story about a council, school, or similar public institution that has chosen to ban Christmas decorations for fear of offending some minority, usually Muslims.
That decision is almost always made by a white British person, and not in response to a complaint. I've not met any Muslims who are offended by other religions celebrating their religious festivals, so the decision can only have been made based on the idea that Muslims are intolerant !!!!!holes who can't stand other faiths. While this may be true for a small minority who are currently stirring up trouble in Aghanistan, is is certainly not true for the majority and anyone who thinks it is are just showing their own prejudice.
The worst thing about this is, when it's reported, it's the minority in question who gets the blame and gets accused starting a war on British culture, when in reality it was caused by a white British person showing their prejudice.
Sometimes I wonder if, when things like this are done, is it some sort of sinister plot to discredit all forms of political correctness, including the ones that actually matter and would make a difference to the lot of oppressed minorities...
...now that really is oppressive.
Edit: LOL The word for a long yellow fruit that you unzip and eat the white bits got censored in this post. I guess someone at MSE agrees with Squack.
The riots were in response to the police shooting what they believed to be an armed criminal. Colour did not come into the shooting.
The results we due to criminals reacting.0 -
Well to be fair I don't follow football, other than to ensure I don't arrange a visit to a particular city if there happens to be a big match there.0
-
It had nothing to do with football.0

I was referring to the throwing bananas at John Barnes thing.. until this thread I didn't even know John Barnes was black.0
