Possibly a random question, but have you recently changed anti-virus software?
If you have, what from and what to?

OK now uninstalled avast. Don't worry not using the web, sending thisnvia my iPad, so no virus on it at the moment. It will boot OK, and run any program, apart from Windows Explorer, where it comes back with not responding, windows forced a Scandisk on c: which came back clean.

Well the answer in the end, as promised, was a complete reinstall from backup disks. Still doing Windows Updates, and it has sorted my Scanner problem out too. Going to do another set of backup disks once Windows has started updating, so starting from a later date next time I have to do it. One major plus was I have split the 750gb HDD in two, and put music pictures and other stuff on the second partition, which was not impacted by the reinstall, so though it is backed up, is good to know for the future.

    Thanks for your help/ideas/suggestions. DG

make sure the pics/music etc are backed up on an external source, I wouldn't be trusting that hdd for too long......
