Asus laptop struggling to open files

I have an. Asus N55 Lappy, which us running Win 7 64 on an i7 processor, it has over this last week going terribly slow. Not out of disk space, and everything is backed up:D
If I go to Libaries, it goes as no responding, but if I walk away and leave it for a while it is OK, but equally slow response t each selection. I can connect to the HDD via the network from my desktop, and it reads and copies files fast enough. Going into Co trol Panel is equally painful, but with patience I have now restored to a week ago, before I did a Windows update debut it has not changed things.
Running Avast, no virus found, ran Malewarebytres full scan, nothing found, so now run out of ideas, any suggestions?
Thanks. DG

It could be a multitude of things really - How long have you had the laptop for and have you installed anything recently? Drivers etc?
Do you have loads of windows/programs open at once? Do you have loads of start-up programs? You might need to head into msconfig.
Maybe a little more detailed info
Thanks for the question!I love adventures. Unfortunately, I don't get to go on them nearly enough. My simple solution? - To indulge in the digital artefacts of the adventures of others. Feel free to indulge in them with me.

Try what others have suggested. Also look in your task manager whilst doing your normal stuff and see whats hogging up your cpu. Doesn't sound right if you have an i7 cpu and its struggling to do basic tasks0

How much RAM does your machine have? Have you cleared the temporary files (Computer > Right click C drive > Properties > Disk Cleanup > Select every checkbox).
[STRIKE]Do you have antivirus installed? Is it up to date? When was the last time you ran it?[/STRIKE]
Do you shut the laptop down fully (and properly) each time or do you hibernate it?
So many questions!!
ps. If you do head into msconfig ... be very careful! If any guides suggest heading to the registry, ignore them for now - let's rule out the basics first - the registry is a very dangerous place to mess around in.0 -
backup, factory restore!!

Sorry for the delay getting back, but everything is taking forever, and yes closed, that is the final solution, if I cannot manage to find the cause.
The laptop has 6gb of memory.
Even when nothing running, it is painful to open anything, though it works fine in Chrome.
Down loaded the Seagate checker, and ran both the Smart and short test so far with no errors.
I have to admit I often put it in Sleep mode rather than shutdown, but I have rebooted and shutdown fully several times now.
Just updated Ccleaner and will dispose of temporary files next job.
Have had the laptop around 14 months, though it has had a HDD failure, about 6 months ago.
Not aware of loading any new drivers.
Oh any by the way, when tring to install the Seagate checker, the first time I tried I got the Blue Screen, though it did restart itself. And it also appears to keep freezing, sometime Ctrl-Alt-Del gives me the screen to select Task Manager sometimes nothing, though if I am patient (very hard as you probably know) it will work in a while.
Usually I can sort things out but this is a confusing one. DGMember #8 of the SKI-ers Club

Hrm, that is a confusing one!
When you say that the HDD failed, it wasn't repaired was it? As in, it's not the same HDD?I love adventures. Unfortunately, I don't get to go on them nearly enough. My simple solution? - To indulge in the digital artefacts of the adventures of others. Feel free to indulge in them with me.

Don't think so, it had to go back under warranty, and came back within a couple of days. Being a long time user of PC's it does not strike me as a HDD problem, more a software one TBH, but I could be wrong.
I have just had to force a close down after it has sat there without response for about 45 mins - I said I was trying to be patient.
The spec from CC is Ms Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
Intel Core i7-26790QM CPU @ 2.2GHz, 6.0GB Ram, Intel HD Graphics 3000
Running CC now taking a long time up to 16% after about 3/4 hour.
Will report back eventually. DGMember #8 of the SKI-ers Club

Wish I could answer that, still having. Problems, managed to run the Smart and Short Generic Seagate tests in Safe Mode, came back OK, failed the Long Generic test. In normal mode the Lomg Generic crashed, and switch off was the only option after about 5 hoirs. However, even in Safe Mode, when I select Computer it hangs, usually eventually gets there, but not always.
Any other ideas? DGMember #8 of the SKI-ers Club
