Upgrade advice - which samsung phone?

I've come to the end of a 2 year contract. My HTC desire has become a bit battered and sluggish. I wish I could have upgraded months ago, and was keen to get an 18 month contract this time instead of a 24 month one.
I want the Samsung Galaxy S2 but orange have discontinued it (been with orange for 12 years and don't want to change due to poor signal with other networks). I could go through phones4u but they can only do a 24 month contract for an upgrade because I'm already on a 24 month contract and it would class as "downgrading" to get an 18 month contract.
As the S2 is already a few years old, I am slightly reluctant to tie myself to it for 2 years. If I have to have a longer contract it would make sense to get a more up to date phone, however I think the S3 is a big big for me and the S3 mini doesn't seem to be as good a phone as the S2!!
Any thoughts as to which phone to go for? Would it be silly to get the S2 for 2 years because it has been out for over a year?
Thanks in advance.

Am confused by P4u saying that to do an 18m contract upgrade is "downgrading". When you upgrade it's a new contract, so it's irrelevant what contract you were on previously. Do T-Mobile offer the Samsung S2, as they signal share with Orange so it will take away the reception issue?
You are right that the S2 will be out of date by the time 18m/24m is up, particularly as the S4 is due out this summer. Worth considering the latest HTC handsets if you are looking at Android, or the Sony Xperia range, which seem to be improving with each new release.
Hope that helps.0 -
If you value the memory card slot on your Desire, be aware that most of the current HTC's lack that capability. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.
In every town, in every state. In every house and every gate.
Wth every precious smile you make. And every act of kindness.

The contract on my Desire is up shortly ... will be considering the S3 or S3Mini depending on Vodafone retentions!0

Thanks for the replies. I've gone for the galaxy S3. It seemed a better idea to go for a newer phone because I'll have it for 2 years. Dialaphone gave me 600mins, unlimited texts and 250mb data for £26 per month and get the handset free.0

I'd be sure to use the data limiter on the S3 with only a 250mb data package.0
