please help; i have made a mistake using internet banking and have transferred a lot of money into someone else's account instead of my own. Is there any way of getting it back if the other person won't co-operate because with the privacy laws the bank won't be able to give me details of who it is.

Don't know about your bank, Jo, but with the Cooperative Bank if you made the transfer today you can still cancel it via the internet site.0

Phone your bank up, they'll deal with it for you and you won't lose a penny.Just run, run and keep on running!0

I thought that when you send a transfer via online banking you have to provide the full name and surname. Obviously if you mistype a number it's not your fault but the bank should not go ahead with the transfer if the name does not match. Am i wrong ?0

thanks for quick replys, i unfortunatly have only just discovered my error, it was into my building society account which has more than 8 numbers in the account, and so it is in the other person's account already.0

It's still up to your bank to sort it out. Usually the payee just agrees to have the money debited (the bank have to ask) if not then they are sent another few letters highlighting the law and then they can pass the matter on to their legal department and threaten them with the law.

Inform your bank.
You should be able to get it back, after all it is your money.0 -

Yes you are slightly wrong! It appears most banks totally ignore the name - its just so it appears on your statement nicely!0
