New Job for one week, Back injury!

Help.
I started a new job last week, after FOUR YEARS on the dole, I'm 56 and out of shape, so I couldn't believe my luck when the employer said "start tomorrow" I later discovered why he couldn't get/keep staff, the place is a nightmare!
The job entails a lot of heavy lifting, and on my second Monday (today) I twisted my back right in front of the owner while carrying a huge sideboard.
I told the owner I had hurt my back and was going home and would let him know what the doctor says.
I don't want to go back because, to be honest, I can't hack it with the nutters he has working there I'm nowhere near fit enough to do crazy stuff the other guys do.
I don't want a sanction from the dwp, if I claim SSP for three weeks can I then then resign and claim the "work on trial" rapid re-claim thing?

Also, I forgot to put the incident in the accident book, is it to late now to do this?
Should I put a self assessment sick note in and try to claim SSP or should I claim ESA?
If I quit the job, I know I will get a sanction, is there a way out of this situation?0 -
You sound like another one who's got too comfy on benefits. I hope you get sanctioned and someone who really want a job get that one.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

Cheers for that.
If I wasn't desperate to find employment I wouldn't have taken this totally inappropriate position, would I?
I gave this job my all, which is probably why I hurt myself.
I'm simply not fit or strong enough to do what the other worker are doing.0 -
I'm going to be harsh too. You were lucky to get a job at your age and having been unemployed for 4 years, most employers wouldn't touch you regardless of age discrimination laws etc. Those that want to get on and achieve in life often have to start at the bottom, that would have entailed lifting for you. Not nice, no but its a job, its money, its self-respect and no more ill-treatment by the jobsworths at the job centre etc. You should have, in my opinion, stayed at that job (nutters and all) and worked your !!! off until you found a better job. It is quite easy to find another job whilst you are still employed, rather impossible right now if you are unemployed. I don't think you want to work, work is too hard for you. I know 60 year olds that could have and would have lifted that sideboard without whinging. Maybe you need to lose weight? toughen up? get the right attitude? and don't bother having a go at me back, I've worked my !!! off all my life to get where I am today so I know all about hard work! You plainly don't.0

You didn't give this job your all, you gave it nothing and bailed at the first sign of you having to make an effort to better yourself.0 -

This post of yours says it all! ESA? you don't deserve that, you have a bit of backache for doing something physical for maybe the first time in years. Have a soak in the bath, take an ibuprofen and get back to work! Work your way to a future huh.0 -
So you don't want to do this job anymore because you don't like the people and you are too unfit to do it?
1- the fact your don't like the people (or consider them nutters as you put it) is just too bad. They are probably feeling the same about you, but they know that's life and you get on with things. You never know, you might find being a nutter is not so bad after all and mix well after some time.
2- being unfit...well isn't it the perfect opportunity to be fit again? Sounds like being on benefits doesn't do much for your fitness, so surely going back on it isn't the answer. Go back to work, be careful with your lifting, then go for a very long walk, with weights in your hands after work. Then you can start running and before you know it, you wil be a happily fit nutter!0 -
If you've properly hurt your back so early on it sounds like this job may not be right for you. No matter the current employment climate your safety at work is extremely important, and you are right to take it seriously.0

Thanks for the constructive comment ScribbleNink, I have no option but to stay off (or leave) because I could not lift even the lightest stuff let alone lift the heavy (150Kg) stuff up the ladder, nor carry them 150 meters with someone who insists on running everywhere!
At the moment I'm as weak as a kitten, anyone who has had a back injury will know what I mean.
If I go back in the most like result is that I will damage myself further, or I will be sent home for refusing to work as required. I only started last week and two guys were fired since I started!
So if I leave before completing four weeks I will be sanctioned, which is madness, I genuinely tried to do the work and sweated a bucket load trying to keep up with a lad half my age and immeasurably fitter than I am.0 -
Hopefully you'll get sanctioned and benifits cut off for life.
You need to man up and do some work. It's a very sad reflection on society. Scroungers like you make me sick.
Hopefully the employer will inform the correct authorities.0
