Yeah, you need to log into the library.

Although a new folder's appeared on my uni account and touch wood the pdfs are working.

RAS - I'll go fix that now.

Ah ok. Was wondering is the password protection for the pdf's was for downloading only or printing as well.

As you can use pdf printer like cute pdf. which saves the document you are reading as a pdf on the the desktop. Works fine on the projrect gutenberg site (but then no password protect there)

Very short on experience then, doesn't help the thread owner though.
Ames can you not dowload the books from the Uni to your PC? and are they DRM'd(eg you have to use say Adobe Digital Editions) or such like?

Have you tried Caliber? Download it on a Windows machine and it will transcribe any e-book format to any other. Also converts pdf into whichever ebook format you want.

Find it via Google - and it's a freebie download from the Caliber site.

OK I'm not very technical so I'll try my best to answer your questions!

The tech guys at uni suggested that but it wouldn't allow any printing. However, pressing save as and changing it from pdf to text let me save it, but kind of stretched it like I said above.

No, I can't download the book from uni to my PC, which is annoying because it's there to borrow like you would any other book, but can only be downloaded onto the uni computers that have the Adobe Digital Edition.

The library have now put up the relevent chapters photocopied into a pdf file, which isn't as easy to read as the original ebook in the right format is, but at least I can download those files and read them on my eReader. The Kobo is better than my old Sony at that, as I can move around the page and zoom in, whereas pdfs on my Sony couldn't be changed, text increased or anything.

Come back real books, all is forgiven....

As for a Kindle, I hate the way Amazon is taking over everything, especially as they don't bother with little things like tax, so would never get one, on principle.

I've got Calibre, so I'll have a go at changing the PDF photocopy to something a bit more manageable. Thanks for the suggestion.

This is something you could try.

Open up one of the ebooks and right click on the page and see if it lets you attempt to print it off. Not asking you to actually print, just see if it does. ( i used google chrome, other browsers it should be file print)

If it does then may try downloading something called Cutepdf, it's a pdf printer, allows you to save documents as pdf's. As i said before, i tried it on a gutenberg book. worked fine, saved all the formatting.

Once downloaded, install and when you go to print, select cutepdf as the printer and print (if it will let you)

    Worth a try.

That's what the tech guys at uni suggested, but when I clicked print (although it was from the print button not by right clicking) it came up with an error message and said I couldn't do that, I can't remember the exact wording.

I'll speak to the library tomorrow (rather than the tech support) and see what they say.

    Thanks for all your help.
