best place to buy a new sofa

Hi!

My Mother-in law is looking to buy a new sofa - she got her last one in Harveys but I see that there is a very lengthy thread about Harverys on here which is very damning.

Anyone have any recommendations of places to look and buy a new sofa?

Thanks!

Rite Price/Keens? We went to both recently and they have a huge selection of stuff at pretty reasonable prices. And they were open to haggling :) Plus it's good to support a local business.

I'm sure that there are lots of locally-owned sofa places around, you'll get plenty of suggestions.

Avoid DFS, from what I hear they're awful.

We bought ours from Keen's at the start of the year. Good quality stuff, decent price, and delivered it when they said they would.

I wouldn't touch Harveys or DFS with a bargepole.

DFS are 'ok' providing you understand that you are not really getting a £4,000 suite of furniture discounted to just £1000 in a sale that must end Sunday. Its really just an £700 suite with £300 for the big glitzy showrooms, TV advertising and the interest charge built in for the interest free credit.

Also, they're pretty good when it comes to fault fixing. They have people whos job it is to come to your home and do repairs.

We bought a 2+1+1 from them three years ago as a 'stop gap' for the snug in our house and it has stood the test of time surprisingly well.

Finally got round to replacing it with a suite from Alexanders in Markethill, but we'll just move the DFS one into the study.

You could also look at the companies based in Wales who manufacture their own sofas. SofaSofa and Thomas Lloyd to mention just 2. Not sure about showrooms though, you might have to buy by brochure without actually seeing them.

We personally have had three sofas and two chairs from them over 20 odd years, and would not buy from anywhere else now for both quality and VFM.

"We currently manufacture over 70 different sofa styles – all here in our UK workshops - and our range covers everything from washable covers to the most beautifully soft leathers. We deliver anywhere on the UK mainland and all purchases are covered by a no-quibble 21 day money-back guarantee.” Founded in 1981, SofaSofa is a family business owned and run by the Ridgwell family. SofaSofa consists of the UK's six leading upholstery manufacturers: Thomas Lloyd, Kirkdale, Divani, Odeon, Oakridge and Leather Workshop. The business is managed by two brothers, Lloyd Ridgwell (Chief Executive) and Tom Ridgwell (Marketing Director), along with several non-family directors, and currently employs over 350 people. Our aim is to supply high quality traditional and contemporary sofas direct to the public at the lowest possible prices, together with a simple and courteous sales experience and a fast and efficient delivery service."
