A little high, that's about a well heated 2 bed, home alone all day pensioner minimum. I'd look to the basics of (1) how you use your night storage heating & insulation. For example the output damper should be completely closed for every minute you are in bed or out of the dwelling - is it ? and the (2) distribution in % terms between~night~store~cheap use and day~rate~expensive~use, this the number 2 is directly related to 1.

No I've never changed the control on the heater but i will now! what about the charge, should that be changed at different times?

It differs all the time of what we use as I work shifts. so sometimes I'll use a lot in the day if I'm off or on nights.
The bedroom is potentially a money burner as its heated by a panel heater. Recently the room has become damp in one corner, so we've had the heater on a lot more than we would usually have it on.

    Hi,

this is what I'm trying to get at, supposing you been paying day rate for night units and night rate for day units, ignoring any daily standing charge.

From 3/2/12-23/1/13, 356 days, so almost a year, you've used 10,034 units, so for simplicity I'll round that down to 10,000 units and say the day/ night split was 70% night, 30% day, so, 7000 night, 3000 day.

    Still with me?

Now lets say your day units are 15p and night units 5p.

So, the wrong calculation would be:

    7000 @ 15 = £1050

    3000 @ 5 = £150

    Total £1200

and this is what it should be:

    7000 @ 5 = £350

    3000 @ 15 = £450

    Total £800

This is only an example, as I don't have your exact usage, day/night split, nor actual prices.

You could use your own usage figures and rates for the period, to give you a clearer picture.

Yeah I see what you mean now. Maybe the readings are correct then as I don't seem to be getting any cheap bills.....
  • Hi,

take another reading in the morning, and compare, I would say the one which has advance the most will be your night rate.
  • Most modern digital meters I see dont do the sensible thing and inform people the difference between day and night, it leads to a lot of transposed readigs. Best they may do is something like a blinking curser under the readin which is current, or maybe defaults to show the reading in progress. Some meters give absolutely no indication at all for day and night
Also we have the faulty analogue timeswitches which the suppliers/distributers dont want to spend money on repairing which complicate correct timings for the switchovers

It is an Onstream by AMPY I think? And yes, there is an r1 that as far as I know is the day reading and r2 for night.

Many people in the world, we each have a different view, mine put simply is (1) input according to what you find comfortable .. .. if the output is generally never opened. If however you are regularly opening the output you (2) do not have sufficient input of stored cheap heat.

Many people in the world, we each have a different view, mine put simply is bedrooms are for sleeping in, there is no reason why a bedroom needs heating anything other than a half hour in the AM and ditto in the PM.

Damp unless its ingress or an internal leak is 90% down to lack of ventilation. You'd be amazed how many hours of open windows it takes to get rid of just one shower or washing up event with closed windows. Put conversely if you don't have extractors, cracking open a window of the bathroom while the event is in progress will rid you of 99% of the moisture that later becomes damp.

So more input - less, considerably less use of an open damper - and sort out the real damp cause will move a lot of your usage from expensive day to cheap night.

Mine is an AMPY and its :

    RATE 1 = NORMAL
    RATE 4 = LOW

How they, in particular the night reading, [R4 or R2] is set up often goes back to the old regional suppliers before privatisation. Often-times the meter and the owner of the dwelling has not changed since the Tories' third election victory, and their most aggressive privatisation [STRIKE]asset stripping[/STRIKE] programme / British Steel / British Petroleum / Rolls Royce / Airways / water and electricity etc.
