Rabbit with bad teeth

  • Hi, I kept her in my bedroom last night and this morning some of the food was gone. She also drank about 250ml of water (kept me awake, lol). But, she still has not had a poo :(

:( How is she this evening?
  • Has she pooped yet? Did the Vet give your any Critical Care or Supreme Recovery (liquid food) to try and tempt her with? You can always make your own by watering down pellets - if it is teeth issues then food needs to be as soft as possible. If there is still no poop I would take her back asap as their guts are designed to be continuously moving - GI stasis can be fatal.

Feel free to message me - I have a dental bunny (Edward) who is currently having them around every 3 months. We sadly lost our other dental bun, Max, in October who was having ops every 4 weeks.

It may be worth contacting the Rabbit Welfare Association for rabbit savvy vet recommendations as if bunny needs continued, long term care it is so so important to have a competent vet who you can trust :)
  • I really hope everything is ok with your bun. Too many people buy rabbits and know nothing about looking after them, but worse than this, many don't want to learn! Well done you for looking after her so well, I'm sure she loves you for it. Let us know how she's doing x
  • Hi, Alice has perked up a lot and has been pooing - which I'm so glad about. I plucked up the courage to phone her previous owner and she says Alice has had her vaccinations, also she knew about her runny eyes but did not know about her teeth (which I hardly believe because they have obviously been clipped, but who am I to judge!)

Anyway, back to the vet this afternoon...

So pleased to hear she's perked up! And great news that she's started pooing again. How did the vets go?
  • Prognosis should be good for your bunny now. Dental work/general anesthetic for rabbits has become much less risky in the past few years + we've had several bunnies have their teeth trimmed. As she's had her jabs, mixi shouldn't be a risk. Our elderly (now sadly departed) dwarf got mixi, despite all her jabs being up to date, but pulled through just fine (lost a lump of cheek, which bothered me more than her) + lasted several years after that. Hope it all goes well now.:smileyhea:smileyhea

I cannot recommend registering for a rabbit forum online enough. I am a member of Rabbits United and the help and advice on offer there is invaluable :)
