SatNav mis-use

I seem to see more and more people using SatNav's dangerously.

1) Positioning them in dead central to driver's eye-line. Almost looks like they are driving to the satnav, not the road.

and/or

2) 'Day mode' at night. Travelling on the motorway at night, the inside of their car lit like an operating-theatre from the bright white map-background an few feet from their face.

It really razzes me off.

Ha ha! I know what you mean. Common sense seems to take a holiday when some drivers stick a satnav to the windscreen. I was following a car the other day where the driver had stuck her iphone to the windscreen right in front of her face. She must have been having to peer around it to see where she was going.

It is interesting to note that in some places, it is only permissible to attach a satnav (or anything else) to the bottom corner of the windscreen.

Anything that obstructs the drivers view is already illegal, however considering the amount of cars I see with strongly blacked out front windows that seem to go about with impunity (not exactly hard to spot!)... we can safely say the Police have all but given up on 'minor' issues of safety. Unless of course you say something rude on Twitter.

    LOL

You'd hate my car then. It has 4 clever little tricks that allows you to light up the entire car and still see clearly out of the windscreen.

    1) Cabin light in front of the rear view mirror (between the mirror and the windscreen). It mainly shines down but generates enough dim light that you can see the entire dash and front of the cabin while still seeing out.

    2) A main cabin light behind the drivers head (but in the middle between the front seats) that still lights up the cabin but towards the back and not the front.

    3) A reading spot light in the front - like you find in coaches above your head that can swivel round that has a narrow beam so it isn't intrusive.

    4) Individual rear lights above each door in the back. They're next to the handle and have a small button. Small but adequate enough to light up that passengers seating area.

If you drove past me with all of those turned on you'd probably call the fuzz and acuse me of dangerous driving however it has absolutely no effect on my forward vision at all due to the clever way all the light is directed away from the windscreen.

Not everything is as it seems!

I like seeing cars where the drivers have positioned the satnav/phone right in front of their line of sight. It enables me to spot the stupid drivers and give them an even wider berth.

No, i know what you are talking about. Properly designed internal lighting is just that. Properly designed.

What i am refering to is a bright-white satnav shining in the driver's face causing them to physically squint. Not good.

It's never occurred to me to notice where someone else's sat nav is mounted or how it's lit. Thanks for the heads up though. I'll be alert to the problem in future.

Ive seen someone with what appeared to be a 7" tablet fixed to the middle of the windscreen.

How about a prize for the best photo of such stupidity?

I once saw an Audi A4 driver on the M25 with a full size ipad under his rear view mirror. When we stopped in traffic I guess he could see from his right pillar to the middle of the bonnet, the ipad filled the screen under the mirror.

I used to get narked with having my tomtom on my iphone over on the passenger side of my windscreen, so I have just bought a car with a built in sat nav... much better...
