How would I know if a retailer's website had been hijacked and the pop-up information was being compromised and redirected to scammers. Basically-what guarantee is there that the pop-up you are looking at is genuine?

That's where your personal message comes in.

You provide that message when you sign up and the bank will then display it back to you when you go to pay.

If that phrase isn't displayed to you when you try to pay - it's not genuinely your bank

I also work for an online retailer that's just added this system to our website checkout. Our stats show that only about 50% of cards (issuers) support this at present, but that number is expected to rise over the next couple of months.

Despite integrating this 'inline' into our checkout pages (rather than as a popup), we've had a number of customers contact us to check it's not a phishing scam. It's a shame the banks aren't being more proactive about informing their customers; given the publicity over Chip and PIN when that was introduced, this is just as big, but for online transactions.

Sounds like a nightmare! I must have about 3 zillion paswords, passcodes, secret questions, mother's maiden names - it's recommended that you don't use your mother's actual maiden name, apparently! I'm just going to go to the shops with cash at this rate - if I can get any out of course...

I would love to discover a system which would enable me to remember which passwords I've used for which sites! Any clever suggestions?

This thing popped up whilst I was trying to buy a laptop computer from Dell. The Mastercard system claimed to know more about me and my card than I did and refused to register me, refused the transaction and I lost a cracking good deal on a computer.
I also had three unauthorised transactions on my Mastercard which were not seen for a while due to mail delays. Natwest claim that Mastercard place strict time limits on when you can get your money back when some thieving large company dips their hands in your wallet, so have refused to even investigate.
I am now moving away from Mastercard, especially anything that has RBS/Natwest involvement as I have had nothing but trouble and strife with Natwest over the years and now it is time to wave the former largest bank in UK goodbye for ever.

Highly recommended for password management of all kinds. I have mine on a U3 USB drive, and goes with me when I travel...

i bet this is "the get out" for credit card companies when it comes to fraudulant activities! think about it, they will say "well they must have your password", so it will be the customers fault!

I've been meaning to sign up for a while and this article reminded me. but then I paused.

Can anyone offer a definition of this bit of the T&C's?

    "8. RESPONSIBILITY

You understand that you are financially responsible for all uses of NatWest Secure."

So...if the bank makes a mistake, who pays?
Sorry to drag this up again, having just had my card request this of me, but this seems the relevant point in all of this.

As far as I understand, you will NOT be able to do a charge back against the company that you are buying from. Perhaps someone with more legal experience would be able to unpick what you are agreeing to?
