We've been using https://www.voipstunt.com through our pc to make calls @1c/min to Spanish landlines but reception rather lacks, very often ! Skype seems much the same.
I want to use our landline to call Spanish landlines so who will do a good deal. A friend said she uses https://www.telediscount.com I've trouble with that as Spain isn't showing up on their site's destination list on my pc, between South Korea & Sri Lanka, yet it is on my friends which is wierd. I rely on her giving me the code.
Thanks.

I have informed telediscount about this BTW.

Personally, I use 18185 - ½p/minute to France and 1p/minute to Spain (see the MSE International Callchecker).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Thanks Heinz but I've just looked at 18185 & it says I need to set up an a/c & they'll bill me separately. I prefer to just dial a number before the one I want & have it go on my BT bill. I don't call Europe that often, I just don't want to pay BT rates on my BT Option 10

In which case, there's one 0844 gateway provider offering a ½p/minute rate to France and another offering a ½p/minute rate to Spain in the Callchecker (and others offering 1p/minute rates).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Thanks Heinz, seems Dialwise is good then.
Can I pick your brains again seeing as you're around & happy to help me ?
It says 0.5p/min using this one. It's a 0844 200 15 15 access number. Is this all day/eves/weekends or just eves/weekends ? I ask because I have just seen in the https://www.telediscount.com site that it was 1p/min but after I called Spain I saw in other area of its site that it actually is 5p/min during day (BT landline)The 1p/min was eves/weekends, confusing. I haven't a clue how much the call of around 5 mins cost me at 10am !

The 0844 group of numbers has charges which range from ½p/minute to 5p/minute. Which rate applies depends on subsequent digits (see the March 2007 BT Specialised Numbers Price List).
There are some 0844 numbers with different day/night/weekend varying rates - but I'm not aware of any used for this purpose that use those (e.g. 0844200xxxx numbers are ½p/minute at all times).
You will note that the MSE International Callchecker has no facility for enquirers to specify the time of day of a call.
BT changes 3p connection charge and then at the specified rate (per second billiing at the moment) on top.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Oooeer Heinz,
Being almost 60 doesn't help :rolleyes2
I have seen this (in the telediscount site) ... the 0844 is not within this group then ??!!??!!
BT rates for 0845 local rate numbers are as follows:
1.00 p/min weekend.
1.00 p/min evening.
3.95 p/min daytime.
BT rates for 0870 national rate numbers are as follows:
1.50 p/min weekend.
3.95 p/min evening.
7.91 p/min daytime.
BT applies a 5p minimum charge.
I've got BT online so I can at least check calls made the next day to see cost.0 -
0844 numbers are similar to but different from 0845, 0870 and 0871 numbers. They each have their own pricing rates - which generally vary according to the 5th, 6th and 7th digits.
As a point of interest, those prices quoted by Telediscount for BT's 0845 and 0870 charges are out of date. BT's current prices for BT Together subscribers are:
0870 - excluding 0870 09, 0870 185, 0870 187 and 0870 188 numbers for which BT charges 4.95p/minute Weekdays, 2.49p/minute Evenings and 2p/minute Weekends.
Weekdays - 3p 'set-up fee'-+ 7p/min
Evenings - 3p 'set-up fee' + 3½p/min
Weekends - 3p 'set-up fee' + 1½p/min
0845
Weekdays - 3p 'set-up fee' + 3p/min
Evenings - 3p 'set-up fee' + 1p/min
Weekends - 3p 'set-up fee' + ½p/min
BT does not have a 5p minimum call charge either - that was abolished on 1/10/2006 when the 3p 'call set-up fee' was introduced (although the fixed 5½p cost of an evening or weekend UK 01/02 call of less than an hour remains).

I'll obviously need to sit down quietly & take all this in but I much appreciate your help, Heinz.
I'm called The Oracle in my Spanish forum but I'm so not up with all this & now we have accumulated so many friends in Spain (sadly without pcs they can use, messenger etc) I'm having to find cheap ways of staying in touch.
I'll let you go now. :wave:0 -
One more thing before we go for our afternoon nap, the number for Spain given on the Telediscount site is 0844 861 78 78 and the price shown is 1p/minute.
That ties up with that BT price list I linked to - 1p/minute at all times. I don't see how it could vary (unless you are overlooking BT's 3p call set-up fee when checking your bill).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market.
