Meter Just Gone In...

Options
.. It was at zero, so thats fine, but it has been in about 2 hours now and is on 0000031 already (used some water for plasterers).

Does anyone know how this reading translates? is the amount I stated 0.3 of a litre??

Just wondering before I highjack next door's water supply!! (joke)

Also, the surveyor said last week, we was on shared water supply (mid terrace), but would be fine and put inside my house where stop c0ck is (near sink).

    Is this normal?

The reading is normally four or five or digits in black that are cubic metres and the other digits in red which are litres (or 1/1000 of a cubic metre). Normal meter readers only read the number of whole cubic meters.

So your "0000031" could be either:
00000.31 = 310 litres used in two hours - some serious plastering going on in this case, so perhaps more likely:
0000.031 = 31 litres used in two hours

from what I got told from Severn Trent you count the first 2 numbers after the . so with my bill in Dec for example it said 0053.0002123 meaning that I had used just over 21 units - this bill was from August to December and was £53 which was more than all right with me!!!

I have worked out that my next bill this month should be about £60/65 from Dec to May (although I nearly gave myself a heart attack by misreading the tiny box and noting down the seriel number rather than the reading:o ) in our house there are only 2 of us but we love our baths and OH is always moaning at me that the washing machine is on (I do about 4-5 loads per week). we do however have the 'toilet hippos' in both toilets.

I am not sure what you mean.

If your meter is reading 0053.0002123 you ignore the decimal places for billing purposes. All that matters is the 53 units(cubic meters). So if your previous meter reading was, say, 18 units, you have used 35 units(53-18)

To only have a bill for £60/65 for Dec to May with Severn Trent is extremely low.
You have(at 2006 rates) Standing charges of £30.24 per year - so approx £15 for a half year. (I am assuming you don't pay surface water drainage)

The Combined water + Sewerage charge is £1.82 a unit so you are only expecting to use approx 22 to 25 units in 6 months. The average for 2 people is 60 units in 6 months.

thats what I thought originally with the units but they said that the 53 refers to the 'box number' and the water is from the digits after the zeros. the water bill was really really low to what we thought it was going to be considering we each have a bath most nights (shower on the other nights)

the bill was total amount - including the sewerage etc. we are expecting some money back from them aswell as there is a soakaway which hasn't been taken into account!
