  • I cook most of our food from scratch but for some reason I am carp at making mash, I can never get all the lumps out and it is quite horrendous! So I'm afraid I use sainsbury's basics. However I make it up differently than the directions on the packet as they are hardly instant. Instead I make it really thick with just freshly boiled water then add cold Kara milk and vitalite until it reaches the desired consistency. Xx

I use the packet instant mash to thicken stew and casserole had a lovely taste to it
  • I buy the Sainsbury's Basics one and it's great! I mix it with hot water with a little butter, a lot of pepper, a dash of milk and sometimes some grated cheese.

    Cheers

  • I'm surprised nobody has mentioned potato bread yet, it is considerably easier to add a little instant mash (still in powder/flake form) to your dough than it is to get proper mash combined evenly throughout the dough. Just adding potato creates a very soft moist loaf but adding other ingredients such as onions, cheese, herbs, bacon etc.. will create a unique savoury loaf unlike anything you would find for sale in a shop.

Mr Mash instant mash is the one I think is the best - however, Waitrose frozen mash pieces are great.

I do buy potatoes and use them when I have a full meal, but there is only me and sometimes I just want a quick snack and then I love instant mash with cheese in the microwave.

Now I want to buy a packet!

I, too, sometimes use it to thicken soup or casseroles & I sometimes use it mixed in with real mash for toppings of fish pie or cottage pie - makes the top a bit stiffer.

ASDA many years ago had a chocolate cake recipe in one of their magazines using instant mash as an ingredient & it made a really moist cake - I know Delia has one using A. Bessie's frozen & there are a couple of american recipes on the web for chocolate & potato cake but they're not the same.

I second that - it is lovely. I use it for thickening soups too. It has really gone up in price lately though. When I started getting it last year it was 18p a pack and now it is about 50-odd pence.

Aldi do their own version which is 69p for 650g. It seems fine to me.
