Used to get Sainsburys own brand instant powder way back as it seemed to make up smoother than the lumpy stuff (Smash? can you still get that? I feel sooo old) Make mash from potatoes with the skins on now, looks a bit odd but tastes nice with a pinch of salt, loads of black pepper and a dash of soya milk.
  • Asdas is nice. I only eat it as a 'snack', make regular mashed pots for dinner and that :)

What's so difficult about boiling real potatoes (yellow stickered ones ?) mashing with milk and butter and freezing ?

    If your hands work, nothing.

Why is it anyone elses business what other people do?

Someone has asked a valid question about something. But everyone seems to think it is fair game to comment on it.

I live alone and rarely buy potatoes as I don't eat them very often.

So tonight I have had left over turkey from sunday and some salad and instant mash.

Instant lasts for ever in the cupboard and saves me money in the long run .

    Yours

I like Smash. :o Whenever I've tried to make my own mash, I've always had one rogue potato piece that's ruined it with it's little hard lumps. Strange how the refills work out more expensive than the tub in some shops.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

We buy ASDA's frozen mash pellets, we find they are really tasty, have also tried Tesco's and find that they're nice too. And I agree about sometimes buying instant/frozen stuff because it lasts longer. Some people can't always get to the store to buy fresh stuff and if they just fancy some mash, they know they've got some in the cupboard/freezer with instant/frozen.

    Each to their own.

  • I have Arthriris and cannot carry heavy potatoes so instant is ideal for me. I buy Sainsburys own. Costs about £1.

Slightly off topic but instant mash flakes (Tesco's Value are flakes) make really good 'crumb' coatings for Schnitzels, chicken pieces or Scotch eggs and suchlike....and yes I KNOW it's not particularly healthy food.... Zzzzzz

Good to know. Ive tried aunt bessies frozen mash it was nice and the fresh mash (ready meal style) in most supermarkets is nice. I tried smash once and didn't like it so not sure about the add water style ones. If its the lump free bit you like, not the less effort I would recommend a potato ricer. I admit to buying the fresh pre-packed mash for a long while before investing in a ricer. Just can't stand potato lumps.
