    usually 2 days for me.

Once you have reported it they legally know about it and must fix it, if you damage you car in a hole they know about and did not fix you can claim it.
But if you reported it in your own name and later damaged your car in said hole you wouldn't have a leg to stand on if you tried to claim

Rubbish. This is a classic case of nonfeasance. The responsible Highway Authority has a legal obligation to rectify the problem as soon as it is aware of it or should have been reasonably aware of it. By not doing so it exposes itself (insurer) to the liability and damages that accrue.

If Highway Authorities put as much Tarmac in potholes, etc as they do creating "speed humps" that would solve the problem!

I agree on this - if the authority have been made aware of the pot hole - it is totally down to them to sort it - and if someone (in the meantime) damages their car in a pothole that the authority have been made aware of - it is the authoritys financial responsibility to cover the cost of any repairs....

The Highway Authority should acknowledge your report and give you a report reference number. If they have not bounce them

My local authority do not provide reference numbers for reports sent by the general public !!!

Mine do and are usually pretty good at fixing after reporting online, are you reporting to the correct department? You need to report to the Highways Department.

The hole is getting deeper by the day and being in the middle of a quiet lane.....

    Is it an unclassified road?

When I have reported a pothole via the website, the area has been marked and the fault addressed quickly, they even offer an option to submit a photo too, I usually geo tag the pic, I can't remember about the reference confirmation.

They will think that you are a troublemaker and are liable to "send the boys round" or take a contract out on you .....

I think that assumes a standard of competence it is rare to get in local councils. The contract is more likely to be taken out on someone of a similar name in a different street!

I have repeatedly sent pothole reports through to my local council as well as directly to my local councillor
Result being - totally ignored - no Highway Authority reference number offered and nothing done
This has so far taken a month (all but a few days) - and still the pothole (s) that I have reported grow larger every day !!
