very tough day but didn't have a choice :(

Okay so this I my first post on here but I couldn't not share my experience.
So last night we received a phone call from my cousin saying she had decided to stay down south (she had been visiting her parents for a week, we checked on the dog twice a day) and that her house had to be vacated by today and that could we sort her dog out (an oldish German shepherd with a lovely temperament). me and my partner really wanted to keep her as she is a gorgeous dog but we have a puppy ourselves (staffy x husky strange combo I know) and we tried to see if they could get along but he was just too lively for her :(. I know she wasn't our responsibility but I couldn't run the risk of he going to a pound and maybe being put down. so I spent all morning trying to find her a home and it wasn't looking good and it as breaking my heart knowing how tough it would be to us to even look after her for a day. then some amazing people from rain rescue in wickersley, Rotherham literally came to our rescue and found a foster home for her. so we dropped her off earlier and we know she is going to a much better home but it was so hard letting her go when we as such dog lovers ourselves. the reason for the post is to tell everyone what an amazing rescue the are (we made a substantial donation for their help) so if anyone is out this way please help spread the word of their kindness and if they have helped you too. I plan on doing all I can to ensure they stay open for many years to come.

It does sound like a lovely rescue.

But as for your cousin, How could she just desert her older dog.

Unless it was a real emergency, and her parents are really ill, I don't think I'd ever speak to her again.

Did she take ALL her possessions when she went for the week. It seems very odd that she just phoned to say flat is going.

Seems awful strange to me, she has presumably left all her possessions in her house.

Or does she expect you to deal with that too. How I would deal with it if it was expected would be just to get a skip.

I also would have got on a train, took the dog with me and handed it over to her.

    Selfish, thoughtless moron.

What do your parents have to say about it then.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Aw, what a shame you couldn't take the dog but you did the responsible thing. I hope she finds a lovely home soon.

I'm so shocked when I hear of people just casting off their pets like that. I'm glad you were able to find a good rescue to take her!

There is a charity that works with shelters across the country to rehome older dogs, it might be worth Rotherham listing her with them http://www.oldies.org.uk/
  • Yeah she left all her possessions in the house and her dad came up to collect them late on friday night, she must have known when she got down there that she was staying but just didnt tell us until the last minute.

im sure the dog will find a home soon shes just so lovely and so well behaved, unlike my crazy husky lol!

    Your cousin sounds awful :(.

Rain Rescue are fab, I'm glad they could take her. Is the dog 'Ava'?

Hope she finds somewhere to rest for the next few years.

I found the dog on their rescue site as well.
Shame on them leaving her outside in the garden in this icy cold weather and shame on her dad for not taking the dog back with him, although it sounds like the poor dog was better off without her.
I don't know if she had had the dog from a pup but how anyone can keep a dog for years then throw it out because it has got old, which some of them have done with some of the pound dogs, I do not know, I certainly couldn't, it would be like throwing out a child. They have given people years of love, they deserve to be given love back for the rest of their lives, not just discarded because they are old or ill.
