Out of curiosity if a filling station has integrated pump management and payment systems how could you get an overpayment?

I would assume the customer who should have paid £60 odd was in the queue behind the OP at the till. The person serving charged the OP for the wrong pump as both would have been showing awaiting payment. Presumably the error came to light within a couple of minutes when the customer tried to pay for their £60 of fuel.

I've had this happen to me - but spotted the error when asked to pay £100+ after filling my motorbike!

Did you pay at the pump? Dead easy, especially if you were in a hurry and didn't expect a receipt for the machine to stay live if you haven't properly reseated the dispenser. As you've pre-entered your details, put in the pin and pocketed your card before taking fuel, the next person drives up and gets the extra at your expense.
