Last week I put in 15 pounds of petrol at a petrol station in town, I paid by debit card and didn't get a receipt because I was late. Just looked at my online banking and I was charged £60.88.

What should I do about it? I'm hoping they are honest and understanding and don't just deny and write it off, hopefully also the person who paid for my pump was honest!

Thanks

    What retailer was it?
It would be rare for a petrol station not to have CCTV so they should be able to easily verify your claim. Phone them or go in and speak to the manager - they should take your details and investigate.

It was BP, yeah that's what I was thinking, thankyou.
  • If you paid by card then I dont think you'll get the money back as, when you looked at the card reader you would have been asked to "check the amount and enter your pin.."

By entering the pin you are accepting the amount shown.

Yeah but you just state that it said £15 and they must have screwed it up later. The real evidence is the video of you at the pump.

If the card issuer can't help it doesn't mean BP shouldn't refund op.
  • Hi,
I run a petrol station and if you go in or call they will be able to arrange a refund for you,
they will already be aware of the overcharge(the till should be over),
it may take a few days for you to get the refund though.
should they be unhelpful just contact bp customer care(0800 402 402) and they will sort it out for you.
    hth,

Out of curiosity if a filling station has integrated pump management and payment systems how could you get an overpayment?

doesn't the system say pump 5 has paid so if someone else comes up and says pump 5 please it will tell the operator it's already paid

what happens if someone goes in and guesses they have used pump 4 and pays £15, what happens when the real pump 4 customer comes in and is asked for £62,00 as the only unpaid bill is from pump 5?

I used to work on a forecourt 40 years ago before all these new-fangled systems came in :D

This is a common scam. Nearly happened to me once.

Hi, I have a business card for work mileage, as such I never used to pay much attention to what the retailer assistant had to say.

Then one day I went in to get fuel, put in about £70, handed over the card and entered the pin.

Later that day the police arrived at work in rather aggressive, confrontational mood.

It turned out the useless assistant had not noticed that a previous customer had driven off after putting in £15 , she then charged me the previous customers £15 and then when she realised there was £70 missing thought it must be me who had driven off.

I later went back to the retailer to correct the mistake and they clearly blamed me for not listening to what the assistant might have said. No hint of an apology.

At the time it struck me as a complete waste of police time for the shortcomings of a dim assistant.
