Lost luggage - claim against airline or use own insuarance?

Hi

Thomson Airline lost my luggage on our return to Gatwick from a skiing holiday. The bag contained items belonging to me and my wife with a "bought new" value of £1800.

We had a snowboard bag that arrived safely, but our luggage was lost without trace.

I would now like to make a claim for the luggage. The options are to claim against either our own insurer (£150 excess, max £1500) or against the airline. I have two questions:

(1) When the insurer states that the max luggage liability is £1500, will they take into account the value of the snowboard, skis and bag successfully transferred? I.e. if that is all worth £500, will I only be able to claim for £1000 of goods?

(2) the airline state that, under the Montreal Convention, they have limited liability with respect to lost luggage. They also state that I "may wish to claim with my own insurance instead". Does anyone know how much this liability is? And what is the normal thing to do - claim using my own insurance company, or claim directly to the airline?

Thanks!

Sorry to hear the airline lost your luggage.

You may have another option for claiming if you have Personal Possessions cover on your contents insurance.

You won't get the value of your clothes new as a reduction is made for wear and tear regardless of who you claim from.

Most home insurance policies have a wear and tear deduction for clothing too.

Yes, I was aware of that. I have edited my post to make it clearer.
