I'm tempted to use free version of Avast. Seems to be AV and malware protection all in one? Or would I need Malwarebytes as well?

The paid for products seem to be full of features I'll never use and use more memory.

Avast is fine. Use MBAM as an on-demand scanner as well when required.

What macman says. That's exactly what I do (and how I have all the computers configured - desktop, my laptop, DD1 laptop, DD2 laptop). :)

My new dell desktop came with McaFee pre-installed. In the past I have always been happy with AVG and Avast so its something new for me to have a 'commercial' AV program. I am aware of some people saying these programs 'slow' down computers and have been considering the value of having McaFee installed.

Question - As my OS is Win 8, will it be better just to use defender and the Windows security? Or unload McaFee and use say AVG or Avast as mentioned above, and switch off Windows security?

If you're happy with McAfee then there's no reason to stop using it ... except that you'll be nagged to renew the subscription at some point. In which case it makes sense to uninstall it now and put on something free (like AVG or Avast).

I can't comment on Defender in Win8, other than to say if you install another AV prog it (should) automatically disables itself.

Is it worth buying the paid version of Avast? It's £19.99.
