Living in Hereford, we are the home of the dreaded Wyevale garden centre, home of ridiculous prices!

Fortunately my OH works next door at the nursery which supplies many of their plants :D I am busily planning my gardens for a complete makeover using plants I get at a nice discount ;) The challenge will be keeping them alive!

They aren't garden centres any more. They are "lifestyle" centres. Cafe, obligatory stand with cheap meditation CD's, clothes and overpriced plants. I go round to look at the displays and then go to my local nursery to get the plants I want, usually at a 30-40% discount.

Another vote for the small nursery, lots of them work 7 day weeks to give the best value and quality possible. You may not be able to get a shed but when something goes wrong they're often the first port of call for help. Try getting that from a garden centre or shed.

Right in the centre of Manchester, there is the most amazing community garden centre which relies on volunteers and people who can donate things like used compost bags. It's the sort of place where you can buy a single, organic, heritage seed potato instead of a bag of 'em. The prices are low, the staff are always delighted to see you and it has transformed a once-derelict inner-city wasteland into something special.

Do all nurseries sell to the public? Can anyone recommend a good one in North London?

This thread makes me glad I have this place, not too far from me.

(A garden centre partly run as an educational charity.)

The selection of plants was v good except for fruit trees. They all looked healthy and came in a range of sizes. Lots and lots of other garden stuff crammed into a small-ish site. The staff are really great and shopping there was so relaxing.

Hi Plum Pie, I went to the Camden Garden Centre this morning & it's a very nice place :)

It handily has lots of big signs up stating shrubs for shade", "shrubs for sun", "herbs" etc. It is a bit more expensive than the Neasden Garden Centre (the herbs were £1.99 for a small pot in Camden vs 99p in Neasden) but as I was looking specifically for shrubs for shade, I found just what I was looking for. I bought a 1.5ft tall pink flower for £6 & a curry plant for £4 :)

I'm ashamed to admit that we tend to buy from Dobbies just because it's at the end of the street, practically, and too handy. Mind you, as I pass by it almost every day, I notice when it has a "sale" on and often buy then.
Apart from that I usually buy from Lidl or Aldi or Woolies when they do half price.
